Poetry allows us to acknowledge the fullness of our being in ways that are often denied in daily life. This denial has often proved both injurious to the soul and bad for business. Poetry unites us with the soul of the world.

David White is author of several books of poetry and a book of prose and poetry, The Heart Aroused. Whyte maintains that poetry provides a treasure of wisdom that gives guidance in times of crisis. The insights of poetry can facilitate an awakening of vision and a breakthrough from the paralysis caused by confusion, doubt and humdrum routine.

Truly one of the most amazing videos I've seen in a long time. It literally moved me to tears, not once, but several times. I never realized that poetry could be so helpful in illuminating the journey. This is precisely where I am in my life and the words here echo what my teachers have told me. Thank you so much for posting this excerpt.
  • David Whyte is an amazing poet and this talk is truly relevant - I have seen him talk and present and he is so real . . . thank you!

What a gifted, articulate presentation...Its an immense problem for those of us in the teachin g , profession to explain the meaning of `loss of soul' . David does it easily, without the affront that it creates amongst the oh so many who neither know tree, branch, raven nor wren and dont know what loss that means.
  • It is wonderful to realize "The forest knows where you are.  You must let it find you."
  • A new version was posted with better sound. Go to the Thinking Allowed channel.
  • "You can never be lost in the forest, for the forest knows where you are." This was a teaching I too learned from Coast Salish teacher WhisStemInknee, Walking Medicine Robe. This tradition has much to teach those with an open mind and heart.

I don't get this at all - if the forest knows where you are, then it does not need to find you. It knows where you are...duh. Makes no sense to say the forest has to find something (you) when it already knows where it is. Glad I could clear this up for everyone.
