This past weekend it was really windy in San Francisco. I'm shooting a big timelapse piece on the whole city and thought this sequence was cool enough to stand alone.

Back in 1987, when the bridge turned 50, there were so many pedestrians walking across that the main span actually flattened out. Engineers did some calculating and said there was no danger.

Yes there are bridges now that are bigger, taller and longer than ever before, but it was this bridge that set the bar on just how massive these types of bridges can be. Therefore the Golden Gate Bridge will always be number one in my book.
  • Golden Gate: "See Gertie? When you dance in the wind, you have to do it calmly." 1940 Tacoma Narrows Bridge: "Glug glug glug."
  • Couldn't see it until I focused my eyes at the top of the screen. That's amazing footage.

Wow I see it if I look directly at the road towards the middle of the bridge, it moves up and down! That's crazy, and to think that this was engineered before a time when things could be simulated on a computer before construction. Amazing.

Wow I never knew it moved that much . Been across it many times ..now I'll be looking at it especially when walking across the bridge. Lol crazy.

I remember during the 80s when the Golden Gate had to be shut down because it was swaying, Swaying noticeably. The local news set up cameras at both ends of the bridge showing the roadway undulating and rolling up and down.... strangest thing I've ever seen there. I have yet to find any footage of that....

It flexed because I ran so fast to save the planet you couldn't even see me
  • Trust me, the Golden Gate Bridge was windy as fuck! we were at the top of the 2nd floor bus!

I didn‘t see it at first. But you need to focus on the red painted light „line“ that builds a bow between the big pylon in the front and the one in the back. You can see the sides of the bridge swinging up and down pretty fast! Looking into the middle of the pavement didn‘t make me see it (as someone else told to do). Liked! Unfortunately a lot of people nowadays have the attention and the observation skills span of a fish.

It flexes, but does it scratch at a level 6 with deeper grooves at a level 7 on Moh's scale of hardness?
