Even in those earliest of days, it was pretty obvious that Kermit was star material.

The, "creator of the whole muppet thing," was a wonderful man by the name of Jim Henson. He was both a genius and a saint. R.I.P., Jim. :*(

Dad talked about how this show was a must-see in the late fifties on the TVs in the downtown DC taverns he and his fellow government drones hit after a dull day's work. A dozen years later, when he had five kids who were all Sesame Street addicts he couldn't have been more pleased!

Kermit: Having none of your business since 1955
  • This is incredible! I had no idea the Muppets started in the 50s. Henson just busted out of the gate embracing technology, education, and pure comedy. The man was a visionary. I feel like the statements in Visual Thinking are the core messages that CTW, Sesame Workshop, and PBS in general have been trying to broadcast. I think some of those messages are "think for yourself", "hone your abilities", and "things are rarely what they seem".

About a young Phil Gaines doing the station ID tag: Yes, I almost didn't recognize Dad's voice--it was little reedy before it matured. Those he left behind miss hearing his terrific voice, but we have many tape recordings and videos of him when we want to hear him again! --his daughter.

Man, you took me way back!! And I'm still here in the DC area!! This was real clever, using sound samples back in those reel-to-reel tape days!?! I used to watch these when I was about 5 years old!!! I'm glad someone saved these!! Thanx for digging this up!!

"I bet some of the smart alecs in the audience have already figured out what you're going to say when I talk to you." ROFL!

I really like the introduction. I also heard that Jim Henson had a natural tallent for art. I wish someone would upload more "Sam & Friends"

Sticking it to the talking heads even in 1961 ... great!
  • I saw the whole cast of Sam and Friends Muppets when I was in Washington DC like the treated ago. That's when I looked up the history of ask the Muppets I loved back when I was young. I can't remember the building T the Muppets were in btw.

  • There are some Sam & Friends footage that we have yet to see. Still nobody has uploaded "Anything You Can Do," "There's A New Sound," "Tweedle Dee," "The Yellow Rose Of Texas," "Weather Warehouse," "Stan Freberg Demands Credit," & "The Final Episode (December 15th 1961)". When do you think someone will ever post these Sam & Friends videos?
  • @kaptainkidshow
Thanks for sharing that detail! Previous to joining Channel 4, Phil Gaines had a classical music all-night show at WWDC titled "One to Six Show". When Phil moved to WRC, his first assignment was that same overnight shift on their radio side. Gaines was the next-to-last full time staff announcer at WRC leaving only Mac McGarry in that role when he was shown the door in 1979. Marion T. "Phil" Gaines III, died May 23, 2010 at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home in St. Mary's County, Md. at age 87.

Maybe it's just that most of the episodes are lost. But it's funny how Sam is the title character and yet the show seems to pay little attention to him.
