Isopods (aka woodlice, pill bugs, or rollie polies) are super cool little arthropods. They can be very useful as cleanup crew in reptile and amphibian enclosures, but it turns out that they can also make really great pets as well. But which isopods are the best pet isopods for you? We have Russ from Aquarimax Pets come by with a ton of different isopods to help you answer this important question.

"So what did you do today?" "I listened to two people talk for 35 minutes about ornamental woodlice." "...okay..."
  • @Aquarimax
I had such a blast filming this with you, Clint! And to think...we barely scratched the surface of isopod diversity!
  • I never realized there were such things as roly-poly enthusiasts.
  • Never had pet isopods, not even sure I want them, but I love watching two hobbyists go bananas about their hobby.

As a gardener i love them! Because they prefer dead plant material and therefore can be wonderful in saving a plant with root rot

Haha I love that he immediately pointed out that isopods aren’t insects. I have a strong psychological reaction to a lot of insects but I keep isopods. My mom thinks I’m crazy but I’m like “they’re crustaceans!” It’s kind of a voluntary exposure therapy. I really enjoy having living terrariums to mimic a tiny ecosystem. Isopods turned out to be a great and accessible option for that. I now have porcellio laevis dairy cows and armadillidium vulgare T+ albino. Some of my dairy cows escaped this summer when it was insanely humid, which was disconcerting 😳 I shored up their terrarium a little better but I still feel kinda bad since they ultimately probably didn’t make it. Live and learn. I still love my podlings! And I won’t forget walking upstairs to go to bed and spotting an isopods casually climbing down the stairs out of the corner of my eye. I was like “Oi! Where do you think you’re going?? Out for a night on the town?!” And he’s like “don’t mind me, mom, don’t mind me….” I picked him up and plunked him back in the terrarium, cheeky boy

Clint, I have to concur... There is nothing not to like about Isopods
  • me before this video: "wild that people have woodlice as pets now" me after this video: 😭😭😭🥰🥰🥰 "I must have all sixteen immediately"
  • @littlesaresare
Clint: "What isn't there to like about isopods?" Me: "That they eat fishes' tongues and then replace them." Clint: "Nothing. Even if they were enormous-" Me: "Like the ones that eat fishes' tongues and then replace them?" Clint: "-they'd still be cute! They don't have a nasty bite-" Me: "Except the ones that eat fishes' tongues and then replace them!?!?" Dammit Clint! :P

The worst thing about isopods is you can't just keep one colony of them. I've managed to keep the species I have below 10, but I fear the moment I have more space I'll end up having a whole room of them 🤣
  • @sampagano205
I like that Russ has basically entered the extended main cast of clints reptiles.
  • @acleus
Ironically, I think they would freak me out a little less if they were bigger. Something small and crawly just sorta makes my brain go "BUG!" and that's not fair to the rollie pollies. lol
  • @barbaraday7662
Clint after seeing every different isopod. “Oooh I like these”
  • @ThunderOrb
I once found a bright orange P. scaber in the wild. Took her home with some normals. Within a few years, I had a colony with both bright orange and solid white morphs. One of the coolest things from my childhood.
  • @wmunn10
I have a colony of dairy cows and I love them. There is one of particular note I nicknamed Dozer. It's quite a bit bigger than the others even at adult size and likes to plow through the smaller iso's to steal food, and once grabbed a fish flake to drag away taking two smaller ones with it.

Want to give the zebras credit that they're very good as the cleanup crew for my Indonesian blue tongue skink. My favorite for the video are the trilobite isopods. Our little buddies are back! And they've had such a glow up!
