Is the price difference worth the money? You can decide for yourself. If your main concern is performance, you will find the Golf R is worth the extra penny. If you care more about the creature comforts and getting around town, you will find the GTI more than adequate.

I have the 2016 R, with APR Stage 1 (with intake, turbo muffler delete and GFB DV+), this car is an absolute blast to drive. I put 19" VMR rims on it with stock suspension and it's a very nice ride. So glad I traded in the CC for this.

Good video. But from someone who has been in media for 15 years, always have the sun to your back. Especially when looking under the hood. :) It's videos like these that really make me want to consider a VW. I've been a Honda man for 24 years.

Having AWD and more hp/torque is IMHO well worth $6000 ;-)

Very honest, straight forward, and unbiased review. I subbed a few months ago and haven't regret it. keep up the great work man!

I had a 2007 GTI with DSG. it was so refined, and the DSG shifted so well I could spank cars with considerably more power due to always being in a power band. Also, it only weighs around 3,100 lbs. I used to love pulling on civic si's, neon srt4's, and ricey civic hatches.

really like that review. straight forward and honest.
  • Idk if it's been mentioned but the Golf R actually has a bigger Turbo as well

What a great overview. It's nice to see someone who has an R still give so much props to the GTI. Definitely an unbiased, great review. Subscribed for sure!

Great comparison review. It's cleared up a lot of questions. Thanks

zed, love your reviews. unbiased and impartial. got my order in for the 2016 R, if my dealer can get a hold of a 3rd car. like you, i love sunroofs, and am bummed out that it's not even an option.
  • Another great video Zed! Your videos are a balm on my wait for my 2016 Golf R! Ordered a DSG silver reflex w/o a sunroof, as it wasn't available in Canada. Just like you, I'm a bit disappointed about this fact, and I must say the panoramic sunroof on this GTI looks awesome! I'm glad to see the silver reflex also, as this color is not available for the GTI in canada, seems to look nice under the sunlight.

I love my MK6 GTI but I'd love either one of these, the MK7 is such an improvement over the MK6 (other than looks IMO). Thanks for the video!
  • Interesting comparison. I love the golf r, but settled (happily!) for a fully loaded 2016 Mk7 GTI then installed the APR stage 1 ECU upgrade for $700, my GTI is an absolute beast!! and frankly way too much power down on the front but hell its FUN

Love car talk.Incidently I drive a Silver 2 door 2015 manual GTI SE Performance Package (The better brakes & real limited slip are my favorite parts.) - a twin ! Love it, best ride ever, soon to get better tires around the 39,000 mark.

Golf R is also made in Germany for what that's worth.
  • @rtomson
larger turbo on R, the engine has been beefed up also -- rods, heads, etc.  more trunk space in the GTI.  You're absolutely right about the turbo lag in the R.  Great overall overview.  I'm with you on the sunroof thing ... $40k and no sunroof -- wtf VW.  I still love my MK7 R though.

Great video thank you! Helping me more and more to make my decision. Not sure if going from a mk6 to a mk7 gti. i feel i want something more special and have been after an R since the R32.
