Kevin Spacey would have been great in this role... I love his acting, it's a shame about all this nasty business with his past.
  • They should keep Kevin Spacey in the movie. If he committed a crime he should be punished by the justice system, but he is still a great actor and this seems to be a great performance.

I knew Paul Getty III between 1965-1966 for we both were U.S. ex-pats in Rome, Italy. I'll get to the impression I had of him at that age - we were 10 to 11 y.o. I was a three months older and I can't remember exactly how we became friends -- I was at his house at least once - but one guess is that I briefly went to the same school from which he was expelled in 1972, St. George's British International School. I left because they actually whipped you if you broke the rules (my parents thought that was overkill too). The thing that struck and stayed with me about him was when I was at his rented home in Parioli -- I lived about a mile from him with my mother - was that his home was so immaculate with one of the first color TVs in Italy at the time (I recall watching the Jetsons on it), but... the place felt cold. Cold in the sense that there was no love there. That said, I didn't visit when his mom was there, so it could have been projection on my part. Or not. All the, well, money in the world -- which included him having something I'd never seen -- a child size full combustion engine car (Jaguar as I recall) in the skinny gravel driveway, but I felt a quiet sadness in him. I remember his ginger hair and him being a nice, somewhat shy kid during the time I knew him. Things obviously changed, possibly in part due to that school I mentioned. We lost touch for I was shipped off to a very strict Catholic school in Switzerland in late 1966. FYI, I was no son of wealth, my father was a former U.S. war correspondent who had decided to live in Rome after WWII, and who had some uncanny connections due to his life as a journalist. I don't know if I met Paul through one of those or through my brief stint at the school mentioned. Fast forward to 1993 or so, Los Angeles, and I was volunteering at a place called Free Arts for Abused Children when a conversation with a fellow volunteer revealed she was a friend of Paul's. Naturally, I was curious and interested in perhaps connecting with him again. But... she dissuaded me from doing so for a lot had happened to him since I knew him. He was then in a wheelchair, not "all there" and so I let it go. He died that same year. But in my mind and heart, I still remember that red haired kid my age still in the innocence of youth those many years ago.

Spacey steals the trailer by saying one word.

Right off the bat with my favorite personal pimp song, Time of the Season - by the Zombies. Fantastic song choice for a movie trailer.

Just finished watching this and it was great. I give Christopher Plummer massive credit for his excellent portrayal of JP Getty, on such short notice. Although, I still would have loved to see Spacey's portrayal of Getty. From the trailer it seems as though, he made Getty seem even more cold than Plummer did. Which is saying something.

Too bad we will never see Kevin Spacey's performance.
