In this video we're exploring the 2nd biggest city in the Dominican Republic, Santiago de los Caballeros. As we explore the city we discuss one of the main questions we get asked all the time, Is the Dominican Republic safe and do we feel safe in the Dominican Republic. We talk about the most safe and unsafe things here in this country and also give some advice for how to protect your own safety while travelling.

In Santiago de los Caballeros we visit:

Parque Duarte and Santiago Apostle Cathedral (the outside as the Cathedral was closed).
We walk around the Historical Centre of Santiago.
We have lunch at The Circus Food Park (maps.app.goo.gl/mGzLMBpED3vmvqL67)
We visit the Monumento a los Héroes de la Restauración (Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration) and check out the amazing views of the city.
We visit Santo Domingo Coffee shop in Plaza Internacional
We give a tour of our two bedroom apartment rental along with the rooftop pool.

  • Thank you guys for your honest opinion about the DR! Keep showing the world what we are all about!
  • Dominican Republic is safe, just use caution like in any other country. Santiago is Mario’s favorite city! We’ve been there so many times. I am glad you made it there❤ Viviane
  • @isell12
Thank you for visiting my beautiful Santiago, the best city to live in DR❤.
  • We lived in Santiago for 5 years and never felt threatened or unsafe. Yes except driving. We also traveled around the country a lot and spent a lot of time with locals as we speak Spanish. I think your advice about being aware, not flashy and not going to shady places at night are all right on.
  • @dougbeers6123
I have lived here (DR) for 35 years. I came here because of the people. It's a lot safer here than most places in the US.
  • @Dee-pj7hh
Guys I never understood why some people always say the DR is not safe. In the Dominican Republic; all people have to fear is fear itself. Dominicans are very social people. Great video guys👍👍👍👍
  • @josie3155
I’m from Santiago & live in the states & I’ve been traveling back & forth with my kids for years & I’ve never had any issues or felt unsafe. Like everywhere you go in the Caribbean or the states crime is everywhere & like someone on here said, common sense. Thanks for visiting my country.
  • I spent 6 months in Santiago the last year never had problems with safety
  • @cristiandiaz6333
I went to a professional baseball game in Santiago (Águilas vs Tigres del Licey). The fans really passionately get into with with opposing fans, but in a friendly way. From what I can remember, the fans spend more time talking to each other than watching the game. They as if they actually playing on the field. I loved it. The best professional baseball game I have ever seen besides Yankees vs. the Red Sox.

I love that you visited Santiago de los Caballeros! Dominican Republic is absolutely beautiful! The people are fantastic! The culture is incredibly rich! The capital city is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the first European settlement in the Western Hemisphere. It is the most ecologically diverse region in the Caribbean. It is incredibly ethnically diverse. You meet Middle Eastern Dominicans, European Dominicas, Asian Dominicans, etc.. The food is delicious! I can't wait to go back. Go! Go! Go!
  • @Rip_Msn

  • @larapfeffer2845
We’ve traveled to the DR six times and we’d love to see Santiago so thank you for making this video! I see that tree all over the DR where I’ve been and I have no idea what the name is either. Looking forward to learning that. We feel VERY safe there too. Like anywhere else, be aware and smart with your cell close to you in hand and bag cross body. Have a sense of adventure & embrace socializing with the Dominicans, they’re very nice & helpful people. Hope to run into you guys someday in the Las Terrenas area, one of our dream retirement towns! We live in mke area of Wisconsin so we can compare accents! ❤

I was in Santiago a week ago visiting my family and went to Parque Duarte. Those big trees are called "Laurel de Indias" from the ficus family. There were lots of trees in the park, but they got removed over the years with the park renovations. There is a huge botanic garden not too far from the historic center and it's beautiful. If you want to get away from the loud city center, there are plenty of green areas around the province. The municipality of San Jose de Las Matas and Janico have plenty of mountains, rivers and parks. Visit the Bao and Taveras Dam Lakes water sports like Jet Ski- rumor has it there are fresh and yummy fish restaurants in the vicinity. You should also consider visiting the Old Santiago "Jacagua" ruins on the northern side of province. Its origins date back to the 1500's, then destroyed by a powerful earthquake causing the settlement to relocate to today's historic center. The views of the northern mountain range from there are amazing if you like hiking. Lots of rivers where you can swim too. :)

Good job ,people who make negative comments about DR think that it will stop people travelling to DR they are just very jealous … the country that has the second highest tourists in all vacation destinations ❤
  • @guillermone1
GREAT video...!!!!! It's a big change from the usual tourist spots most people normally visit and we see on promotional videos. It gives you a completely different perspective of what the DR is really all about and it tells you that the country has it all.
  • Santiago is my favorite city of the entire country. This city has a espectacular mix of culture, gastronomía and the real esence of the Dominican people. Just love it.
  • @cyntella
I lived in the DR for close to two years, 3 months in Santiago and the rest in La Romana. Bad people are everywhere around the world BUT like all places, don’t flash any wealth, be aware of your surroundings and pay attention. Nothing bad happened to me and I go back each winter to Bayahibe and again, just be cautious. DR is no more dangerous than any other destination.
  • I lived in Santiago for 7 years, left in 2018. It's a beautiful city. I have to admit that I was a bit scared when you guys were in the downtown with your cell phones and camera on hand. As a best practice I've always avoid using my cell on the outside. I would recommend a nice restaurant (whenever you come back😊) it's called Camp David, there's a stunning view of Santiago from here, mostly at night. Nice video 🎉
  • @louis71251
The tree is called CEIBA. it's an ancient endemic tree of the tropics
