  • Obviously, we all have different opinions on what makes a good place to camp, but I hope you find the time to check out some of these sites! If you do, please let me know how it went!

Exactly what I been scavenging the internet for the past hour, awesome ! Subbed
  • Cliff, Seward lean-to is my favorite sot in the whole world! Spent many a year there!

Loved the series! West Stony Creek LT wasn't built when I thru-hiked. Looks nice! Abner Brook has a nice spot. Woods Lake is trashy. Rock Lake has a nice campsite where the LT used to be. Silver Lake is great, but often taken. Spruce Lake #3 is really nice, even if I remember the sprained knee that I was nursing. Getting from there to Piseco was No Fun. Any campsite around the West Canada Lakes! I wish I'd had more time to spend there. Cedar Lake #2 - great site. I used the tent site on the lake shore by the dam and that's great, too - still on the beach. Tirrell Pond is beautiful. I didn't camp there, but I swam. (Keeping a weather eye out for floatplanes. What I wasn't wearing wouldn't shock a hiker, but floatplane tourists are a different breed.) Salmon River - when I was there, someone had left a couple of lawn chairs! Plumley's - I camped at #2, trying to find the lean-to after dark by headlamp. Didn't see any of the view until I woke up in the morning and there was the lake and the mountains! Wow! Any site on Cold river, but especially Cold River #3, Seward, or Ouluska. Wanika Falls - I camped at #1 because I'd just fallen in the damn river in near-freezing temps. I needed a fire Right Then and wasn't going to go another step. (I was southbound - and in the morning I felt well enough to push on. But I bailed at Long Lake because I wound up with a nasty case of bronchitis. Like you, I took three tries to finish.) I don't think 2021 is the year - the Great Plague will be going on for months yet - but one of these days I want to hike from Manhattan to Lake Placid on the Long Path. (Including the part of the route that isn't blazed, just a set of landmarks where you have to find your own way.) That will be tough - but awesome if I can manage to pull it off! Keep on hiking!
  • Hi Jay. Stayed at the Salmon River campsite last Friday night. Loved being right next to the river too!! Took a little splash in river to freshen up despite the cold water. Very pretty autumn foliage. A few trucks went by on the bridge, a little creepy in the dark, but not a big deal. I agree, might not be the best place if heavy rainfall, though. Had a beautiful sunny day and clear night. Recommend this site as a place to stop before the big climb up the ridge, if heading northbound. Also, just an FYI, a new bridge has been built to cross O'Neill Flow to get to the O'Neill Flow Lean-to on Tirrell Pond. I watched your video from last Oct 2019 that showed the bridge was out. I highly recommend the O'Neill Flow Lean-to! Off the trail, so quiet and private. Beautiful beach with fire pit. Clean, nice lean-to set up from beach about 150 ft. Tirrell Pond was gorgeous with the fall foliage! Thanks for another fun and helpful video, Jay.

Great info! Thank you, not sure all will fit in, but at least I know where I can hang for sure. Attempting solo thru hike this Sept.
  • Nicely done, have not seen anyone rate the sites as you did. I to stayed at the Seward campsite and agree, tough to top this spot.
  • @jamestribol1434
yea spruce lake, Tirrell pond, and W.Cananda lakes section have great Leantos/campsites. Cold river campsite right past Shattucks clearing is good....if I recall its right as soon as you cross the river on a bridge...I hope to do the trail again some time, likely north to south and do it in late Sept to see the colors. It was about 25 yrs ago when I did it solo, yet had a friend do a few nights with me mid way.
  • @SiriusHikes
Thanks so much, this will be a great resource for next year's trip!
  • @Snitchols
Great video. I've seen numerous deer swimming across a body of water, and it blows my mind every time I see it happen.
  • Great video idea. Your videos are a great resource for hiking the NPT.
  • @SuperPangloss
Thanks for the great vid! We just did the Placid to LL section, (couple weeks ago). Was awesome! Stayed at Wanika falls 1st night (right by the falls), Swam in Millers falls....awesome! And took refuge at Plumbleys during a heavy rain storm. Last night was at Catlin Bay on LL. We set up camp and then went to town for steaks, sweet corn, baked taters and beer for our last night feast (brought it all back to camp and cooked there)......was awesome! Next spring we are doing the remainder of the trail.

This video and you have inspired me! Hope I can hike this trail next year.
  • @capsoutdoors
I can vouch for Spruce Lake LT#3, such an amazing location to spend a day or two! I've been looking into doing the entire NPT so thank you for the great information.

Salmon River is now a designated site. If there is no "camp here" disc, it must be considered illegal to camp there.
  • @minnowpd
Tirrell is pronounced 'Tirl' . named for Mike Tirrell, only survivor of an early sttlement.
