In 2019, we filmed a traditional Japanese wet shave video in Kyoto with Mr. Shimomae who is now 79 years old. So he was 74 years old when we originally filmed with him. Each year since then, he asks us to update his age in the YouTube video title 😊❤️

下前理容室 Shimomae Barber Shop is tucked away on the second floor of a building not too far away from the very popular Shinkyogoku Shopping Street.

What makes the experience fun is that he is really friendly and loves all the people from around the world who visit his shop, and he has everyone sign a map and guest book 💈❤️🙌🏼 Visitors from the Netherlands, France, Nepal, and Canada have stopped by his shop.

Thank you so much for stopping by and watching our latest videos from our travels in Asia 🙏🏼❤️  Many of you have asked and wondered if we are still in Asia.  We are no longer there.  This series of videos was filmed last year (several months ago). In case you have missed any of the videos from this series, we’ve created a playlist that you can check out here 👉🏼  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xN0NneGfLMU&list=PL2GmdNY-n066F88NlSvPFrGQA8mr_sHTp   Hope this finds you doing w

Ohhhh the good old days... when you could get a shave from another person. What a time to be alive... 2 weeks ago.
  • @fried2styles
Consider the beautiful simplicity of this: no talking, no music, just a razor on skin and the clicking of the clock.
  • @penguinmayhem33
I feel like that guy in the background is still in training after 30 years

I thought my boy was about to start a cup of espresso before gettin to work.

Back in the 80's when I was stationed in Japan, there was this old barber nicknamed "Shaky Jake". When he was holding a scissors, comb or razor his hands were shaking BUT as soon those instruments touch your hair or skin, the shaky hands were gone,he was the best barber we have ever seen.RIP good man!
  • @boodleboy
I'll be damned. At first I thought "oh well, it's a bit patchy, he's very old, bless his heart", but at the end - cleanest, nicest shave anyone could ever want. Admirable.
  • @steven_farmer89
To this day, the man’s facial hair has never grown back. The shave was just too good.
  • Got a shave and a haircut from this bloke today. Best shave I’ve ever had. He proudly showed me this video and how many people had watched it. If you you go to the spot in Kyoto, please tip the man at least a 1000 yen for being a legend.

His back is permanently curved from years of dedication to that profession in all likelihood. Much respect for that barber. Glad to see it’s not a dying profession. You come out feeling like a million bucks. Every time lol.

I hope Shimomae-san is doing well and his business has received a boost from this. He is clearly very skilled and experience. If I'm ever in Kyoto, I'll be sure to look him and the Shitamae Barber shop up.
  • This is what it looks like when a master in their craft goes all out.
  • There's something so relaxing about the lack of noise except for ticking of the clock and the sound of the hairs being cut...
  • @Anthraxxx999
The clock ticking in the back makes this even more relaxing, almost like a hypnotherapy
  • @johnjordan6032
That’s a $100 dollar shave right there imo. That barber is a relic and being serviced by him is an honor.
  • @akenosan
Every year or so youtube puts this into my recommendations and I stop by everytime to enjoy the atmosphere again.
  • @jbot91
Why does it seem like the Japanese have so much respect for everything. Like even their bartenders aren't just some guy who tends bar, it's a professional. Everything they do they do with consideration, care, and respect.
  • @josephus3364
Love that you always try to seek out the old timers.
  • I just had my haircut & shave here today. Bloody great experience. Highly recommend if you’re in Kyoto 👍
