Back in the 80's when I was stationed in Japan,there was this old barber nicknamed "Shaky Jake". When he was holding a scissors, comb or razor his hands were shaking BUT as soon those instruments touch your hair or skin,the shaky hands were gone,he was the best barber we have ever seen.RIP good man!

I'll be damned. At first I thought "oh well, it's a bit patchy, he's very old, bless his heart", but at the end - cleanest, nicest shave anyone could ever want. Admirable.

To this day, the man’s facial hair has never grown back. The shave was just too good.

Got a shave and a haircut from this bloke today. Best shave I’ve ever had. He proudly showed me this video and how many people had watched it. If you you go to the spot in Kyoto, please tip the man at least a 1000 yen for being a legend.

His back is permanently curved from years of dedication to that profession in all likelihood. Much respect for that barber. Glad to see it’s not a dying profession. You come out feeling like a million bucks. Every time lol.

I hope Shimomae-san is doing well and his business has received a boost from this. He is clearly very skilled and experience. If I'm ever in Kyoto, I'll be sure to look him and the Shitamae Barber shop up.

There's something so relaxing about the lack of noise except for ticking of the clock and the sound of the hairs being cut...

That’s a $100 dollar shave right there imo. That barber is a relic and being serviced by him is an honor.

Every year or so youtube puts this into my recommendations and I stop by everytime to enjoy the atmosphere again.

Why does it seem like the Japanese have so much respect for everything. Like even their bartenders aren't just some guy who tends bar, it's a professional. Everything they do they do with consideration, care, and respect.
