What a shame that Green Bank residents can't watch a video about them

The green bank telescope is epic. Fun facts: In 8th grade all West Virginia students can apply to spend 2 weeks there. They have a stem club for middle school kids and in that club you look for different waves. There are many hiking trails nearby. They have signs around the perimeter as a reminder. One time a microwave was set up and really messed stuff up.

  • They had a documentary there where they interviewed people who got sick while near electronic devices. It was funny because everyone had at least lamps at their homes

This is why you need to use the InterNed when in Kepler, West Virginia.

A Dollar General recently opened up a location in Green Bank and the electric doors caused interference. They fixed it by slowing the doors down.

  • Hooray West Virginia gets another tiny spotlight. We get the least-wanted Fallout and this. We're really moving up in the world.

Doesn't the second ammendement say "[...] the right of the people to keep and arm Bears, shall not be infringed.".???? 😤

Tom Scott and Matt Gray did a video about this because they actually went there. TL, DW: the restrictions are legally in place, but nobody follows them and nobody that's in charge seems to care. As long as you're not, like, operating a clandestine radio station out of your basement or something it doesn't seem to be a big deal.

Thanks for this video! I go skiing there every year where there's no cell service and I even had to make sure my ham radio handhelds weren't using any bands that they were operating on that day (they have a schedule on their site). We even stopped by to take a tour since we always drove by on our way to the ski resort. It's really fascinating to learn more about it!

I am surprised the restriction zones are so small. In Australia where the Square Kilometer Array is being built, the inner zone where all radio waves are forbidden is 70 kilometers from the telescope. The mid zone with blanket restrictions on high powered radio is 150 kilometers, and the outer zone, called the consultation zone, is 260 kilometers, where radio transmitters have to be built in consultation with the telescope, and must follow any restrictions the telescope decides to impose. They are very serious about making the telescope the most radio-quiet place on Earth. The problem for the fruitcakes is that they won’t allow any habitation for anyone not working on the telescope within the inner zone. You have to be a scientist, engineer, kangaroo or a bird to get in there.
  • Why is it a square? And why that square area in particular? The dish isn't even in the middle of it.
