Being in the military I kind of learned to not get attached to anything. I don’t hold value in any material object and will be downsizing to a duffle bag and a backpack before my test run in October.

Scrap your crap. You don't need things. Make yourself free!!! I'll be there soon brother.

Most of my past was lost during one of 24 years of military moves. I don’t have any memorabilia from my childhood. Makes the move overseas easy. Between military and a corporate career I’ve spent over 20 years abroad. Looking forward to the Philippines.
  • Ace I have heard a friend of mine who is 75 and a full time world traveler say to own your stuff and never let your stuff own you. That being said I am slowly getting rid of things that are of sentimental value. If I have not used it in two years and it is not something that my kids want I either discard or donate to Catholic charity. I keep dwindling down my collection of everything from A to Z and am getting close to where I need to be. You can do it !!!!!!
  • Congratulations ACE ! Keep us informed in detail . Following your lead.
  • Ace, you gotta shitcan all that stuff in the bins. Get squared away mister, you don't need any of that shit.
  • Well that makes perfect sense. As you've stated many times your children in the States are now adults and have launched on their own...however your daughter in the Philippines is still elementary school age. Duty calls you back to the PI, understood, I'd head back there too as that's the smartest, and by far the cheapest plan for #1 single bachelor type guy to execute with young daughter in the Philippines to spend time with for sure . Congrats on moving to Angeles! I was there TDY back in the 1990s and it's definitely unlike anyplace in the USA...you're 100% correct about that

All that stuff in those totes is probably unnecessary so you should give it away. I had stuff like that in the US when I moved over seas in my Dads house. I was unable to return when Dad died. My stuff was disposed of. I know its hard to let go. As time passes you will let your few belongings left in the US go. I live in Panama now. It would not be practical for me to go back to the US now. Things have changed so much. I don't even make enough money now to support myself in the US. Its better that I stay in Panama where I can at least afford to support myself. I will use the Panamanian health care system when I get older and infirm. I have already been in Panama for going on 15 years.

I had the same sentimental junk problem. My advice move on from your past and just throw it away - or take a picture of each thing then throw it away if you are having trouble letting it go. I'm living in SEA until I die. YMMV.

After about 5 years your sentimental stuff won't be very important anymore.. It's a process to let go of our material possessions.

The only thing I want to store is a valuable comic book collection that stretches from the 50s to the mid-90s. My collection was valued at over $500k in 2010. I used to buy at least 4 copies of number ones. I inherited my cousin’s collection from the 50s-60s when he passed away during the Vietnam War. He had an incredible collection.
  • Apart from winter clothing which comes in handy during vacation back to the US, the rest are disposable.
  • Free place to stay is a big deal when going home in USA. I have big family that helps also!
  • @Justin-mn9ye
Looking forward to seeing the full tour when you’re all settled in! Congratulations Ace !
  • I am down to 3 suitcases: a large, a mid size, a carryon along with a smallish backpack. I am heading your way in late August ABC (God willing)...👍
  • Dude, do your sister a favor - Costco has a rack on sale this month that is made for those storage boxes. It will take up a lot less space and make the boxes easier to access when you need something.

  • Isn't knick knack stuff considered clutter? I thought those boxes were going to be filled with SnapOn tools, heirlooms or expensive items. Its just going to turn into a problem for whoever is storing unless you made a deal it's only for 6 or 12 months. Then you will either remove or they can throw away
