Myocarditis

One cardiac condition that has gained a lot of prominence especially during the COVID-19 pandemic is Myocarditis and I have lot of patients who come to see me with symptoms of palpitations, breathlessness and exercise intolerance after catching COVID-19 who are worried that they may have developed Myocarditis.

In this video, I will discuss Acute Myocarditis.

Myocarditis basically means inflammation of the myocardium.

The myocardium is the middle and therefore the most important layer of the heart (it lies between the epicardium and endocardium) which contains all the cardiac muscle cells which are responsible for the conduction of electricity of the heart and also regulate the contraction and relaxation of the heart.

If the myocardium is inflamed and damaged then it can lead to problems with electrical conduction and therefore lead to heart rhythm disorders and it can also lead to ineffective contraction and relaxation of the heart which is termed heart failure.

So the problem with myocarditis is that depending on the severity and extent of inflammation, the patient is prone to dysrhythmias (heart rhythm disturbances) and heart failure - both of which can be life-threatening.

How common is it?

Data from all NHS admissions from 1998-2017 suggest that there were about 13000 hospital admissions with a primary diagnosis of Myocarditis over a 19 year period although this is likely to be a gross underestimate because a significant proportion of patients may with the condition may have not had symptoms to the extent that they presented to hospital and it is not uncommon for diagnoses like ‘myocarditis’ to be missed at the time of admission. I am very confident that we have had a lot more admissions with myocarditis during the COVID pandemic partially because of the virus itself but also because of increased awareness of myocarditis amongst patients and healthcare professionals as a consequence of it being found to be a dangerous consequence of COVID infection.
If we look at these patients who were admitted, 2/3rds were men and compared to women, the median age of these men was about 33 years and the median age of women was about 46 years.

As a heart patient I was since 2017 actively searching for other young people with the same problem. I had to search the whole world to find anyone. It was very rare. After the vaccine was introduced I know 3 people diagnosed myocarditis within 9 days after the vaccine. Another two developed arrhythmias and had to get an ICD and a pacemaker. Another one died after the vaccine because his heart valves got inflamed and they had to be replaced. I was 3 years symptom free and after the vaccine my ICD recorded arrhythmias between 1 and 3 weeks after the vaccine. This was the first time after my cardiac arrest I felt I am about to die again. I belive most people didn't notice that they had an myocarditis. I just noticed it because I'm very sensitive on this now and then I have the ICD who clearly proved my ventricular tachycardia. All these cases I personally know and happend within 9 days of the vaccine.

There's an elephant in the room. But, sadly, the elephant died of myocarditis.
  • I got the moderna vaccine and the booster and my heart has never been the same.
  • The more I listen to you, the more grateful I am for my health. And the more grateful I am to know there are doctors like you who strive to keep up with health and heart issues. This is one reason, along with your communication skills, you're a great Cardiologist. Thank you, Doc and much success to you.

The best cardiologyst on the whole internet! Thank you Dr Gupta for make medicine so easy to understand.

Thank you Dr. Gupta. This is exactly what I went through after my 2nd dose of covid vaccine and I experienced weird palpitations/sensations in my heart (very different from my regular SVT palpitations) on the 2nd, 3rd and 4rth day after the vaccine. My abnormal ECGs starting since a week after my vaccination and many after show infarct. But I now understand what it could mean. When I speak to the physicians here, they simply say maybe I had a heartache without researching any new findings from covid vaccine fallouts. I had completed a barrage of tests you suggest in your videos (like BNP, 2D echo, nuclear test) and am ok with whatever outcomes lie in my future. You are truly a blessing for people like me who thrive on knowing their condition.

I am a 47 year old woman, I was very fit and active July 1/2021 3 weeks post my 2nd jab I went into full blown heart failure. Myocarditis/ Ejection Fraction of 25 / collapsed in my home and seized became unconscious for over 5 minutes. Now living with an ICD/pacer spent 3 weeks in hospital. My life has never been the same, some of the meds I have been on nearly killed me. I have had many complications from all the drugs, oh and I too had a myocardial biopsy. Nothing but denial from the medical system that it was from the vaccine.
  • Your knowledge ,style and delivery is the best , what a doc ! Montreal here

There is an awful lot of it about this year! Doctors and scientists are baffled.

The needle jab did much more harm than good. It's the key 🔑 difference between pre and post anything 2019 related to the heart and even other issues.

Since my second jab when I was 18 I’ve had both MRNA and Pfizer vaccines and I’ve experienced heart palpitations and chest pain but mostly heart palpitations ever since, I’ve had blood tests and a ecg which was normal and an echocardiogram which I’m still waiting for the results and it’s ruined my life tbh I don’t do anything cause I’m worried about the palpitations and have went to A&E multiple time and been sent back home because I’m young they think I can’t have anything serious wrong, and had no heart problems prior to vaccine, in other words it’s ruined my life 🤣

Dr. Gupta, you are such a caring person and very knowledgeable. We are watching you from Australia, and we wish to thank you very much for teaching and healing us through your youtube videos. We have learned more from you through your videos than from our family doctor and Cardiologist. You explain everything so easily to understand, and you are a delight to watch and listen too. May God protect you and richly bless you in your life journey❤🙏

Thank you so much for everything you do. I have developed “lone A-fib” in the last couple of years, as a young and otherwise very healthy male. Not sure if it is related to myocarditis, but will soon see an electrophysiologist to get more information. Your videos have been a tremendous help for me.
  • @HedegaardGaming
Dr you are amazing. My current cardiologist has TERRIBLE bedside manner and made be feel like my life was over having some left ventricular hypertrophy. I'm doing my absolute best to boost my EF rate, thank you for your content.

My son is 26, and he just suffered for myocarditis. Luckily he is doing great right now. But I will tell you Dr that you helped me deal with this. It was a blessing to find your site, and all your helpful information. It really helped my fears.
