Mysterious world of the colossal squid

Published 2013-11-11
Descend deep into the dark, cold Southern Ocean and check out the mysterious world of the colossal squid.

The top of the ocean is light and warm, and abundant with life. But if you head down a kilometre or more, you'd be in the dark, cold ocean deep. More people have been into space than have gone down deep below the ocean surface, yet it's the largest habitat available for life on Earth.

The colossal squid, the most massive invertebrate on the planet, makes its home in these cold depths of the Southern Ocean.

You can view this video in 3D at the Colossal Squid exhibition in the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.

Colossal squids are so weird. I really wish there was more footage of them because they are so awesome

As both an aspiring 3d modeler/animator and someone interested in undersea life, I deeply enjoyed this.
  • Some animals don't get much attention including the Colossal Squid but the way this animal is portrayed in this great animation is amazing.
  • Beautiful video. The Sperm Whale and the Colossal Squid, two of the most magnificent creatures ever to live on Earth, and epic is their battle to survive.

That really was a beautiful video, wonderfully crafted. Haunting and creepy in parts but the best images we will probably ever see of a colossal squid in it's natural habitat doing its thing

That moment when you search for colossal squid and only find giant squid videos -_-
  • @rainbowlicious
Sperm Whale: Oh hello there! I see you got my meal for me. THANKS!
  • I hope we'll be able to record a live colossal squid in its natural habitat. That's never been done before, unlike with the giant squid.

I dont think people realize the scarcity out of its beauty, and how scary it is let alone... This is a 30-40+ foot tadpole with a beak that can rip flesh with ease, has giant tentacles and spidey senses

Fantastic. The gradations in the water are probably the limitations of youtube compression. Some stuff gets beat up, other stuff doesn't. I wonder about uploading my old animations again to see if things have improved.

THANKYOU!!! That was so well put together. It's the best of anything ever tried on the subject. The amazon and respected Collossal Squid!!

I like how it shows the food chain lanterfish->toothfish->colossal squid->sperm whale->human then it shows a lanternfish eating a baby colossal squid to complete the food cycle.
