Some of the best personal item bags I’ve ever had were actually made as diaper bags. They can be found cheaply in abundance at most thrift stores and plenty of room and organizational pockets. Most can also be used as a handbag, over the shoulder, and a backpack. Much cheaper than conventional “travel” bags and usually more useful!

I don’t use the seat-back pockets; people put all sorts of trash in there. I wipe down the top, sides, bottom, support arms of the tray table, and I hang my lightweight small crossbody bag on the support arms. When the tray table is closed, all my flight essentials and valuables are in front of me. When I go to the lavatory, the bag goes with me. 😁

I don’t fly very often. I have a lot of anxiety around flying, so if I can drive, I will. However, I pack my “personal bag “ for spending 1 night at a hotel or a friend’s house on the way in my travels. It’s just so much more convenient to only have to grab one small backpack than getting out the whole suitcase. I can have multiple packing cubes ready to swap out, with each cube holding a full set of clothes for one day, if I will have multiple overnight stops. I really love so many of these ideas!

I just did 12 days in Europe with a 22x9x8 carry on and a 12x9 personal bag , everyone else on the tour looked like pack mules . I kept the personal bag in the hotels as so many places make you check a bag now , I used a neck wallet most of the time with my I’d passport , some euros and even a lip stick inside . Felt free and easy . I left behind my liquids bag in a checkin at Rome airport but it was nearly empty , my make up bag had only 5items in it , I did compression cubes and did the 5 4321 rule . I never felt I was missing a thing

I flew recently and they made an announcement before takeoff that they observe “quiet cabin” and reminded everyone to use headphones with their devices. I was so happy to hear that!

The suggestion to put your in flight bag in a grocery bag was me. 🥰🥰 I’m so glad you found it useful! Great tips! I completely agree about bringing a few extra clothes too because I have had mine lost a few times and had to learn that the hard way.

I'm in New Zealand, and just heard that our international airports have got new scanners, so we don't need to take out liquids and laptops anymore. Yay!
  • I use doggie poop bags for the back of the seat. They are small enough for me to use as a garbage bag

For my recent coast to coast trip, since ice and gel packs are a pain to get through TSA, I froze my bagel and my chocolate and used them to keep my cheese and sliced turkey cold. They stayed frozen long enough to keep the perishables cool enough.
  • The trip you don't pack the emergency change of clothes is the one that your luggage will go wandering.
  • Thank you- I always pack snacks. Recently, I had to change flights, due to weather cancelation, to a 10 hr one. Having food allergies, they had nothing on the plane I could eat. Thank goodness for the snacks I brought!
  • I would pack in my personal bag a bathing suit cover up. I have on the past gotten to my resort early and O am told to enjoy myself to pool or beach. I want a cover up to walk around. Cover up is used for so many uses. Cover up, shawl if air conditioner is cold and of course a robe.

Sani-hands wipes say that they can disinfect the Norovirus. I’m taking a bunch when we go on a cruise later this year. Bonus, they don’t count against your liquid allowance.

In Australia and many parts of Asia, 7kgs is the total weight of your carry on bag (and with low cost airlines, the total weight of your carry on AND your personal item must be less than 7kg or 10kgs if you buy a more flexible ticket) if it's 7.5kgs they may make you check it in and some airlines make you weigh your carry on at the gate. But in Australia you don't have to have liquids separate travelling domestically, you can have as many liquids as you like (and can take bottles of water through security as well).
  • I purchased this bag, and I must say it is the most awesome personal bag I have ever owned. Fits perfectly under the airline seat, big and roomy, comfortable to wear and has MANY zippered compartments for absolutely everything you could want to take. Make sure you purchase the bag with the additional zipper compartment for your laptop. You will not be sorry about this purchase! LOVE IT!!!

I have personally had THREE suitcases lost since 2022, one was traveling to Copenhagen Denmark for our son's wedding. The luggage didn't get delivered for 4 days. The last was again traveling back from Denmark and we got it back three days later (Different airlines each time). I have learned to ALWAYS travel with a change of clothes.

I put the things I want close for the flight in a belt bag. I stuff it in my backpack to board then pull it out after take off. Or wear my favorite denim jacket with its gazillion pockets, it fits most anything I’d want for the flight

I agree the videos and games without headphones drives me crazy!!

Another advantage of ear plugs, and this came from my brother who is a pilot, is it cuts down on the high pitch whine from the jet engines.
