Rescuers in Taiwan are working to reach more than 600 stranded people, a day after the island experienced its worst earthquake in 25 years.

One survivor has recounted how tremors unleashed rockslides "like bullets" around the coal mine he was working at.

The 7.4 magnitude earthquake hit near the eastern county of Hualien, killing nine and injuring more than 1,000 people.

Some stuck in tunnels and near a national park have been rescued by helicopters, but 34 are still missing.

  • Incorrect reporting. Most buildings did not collapse. They leaned. Taiwan has very stringent building laws, which is why the death toll was so low.

2 mountain road maintenance workers were hit by falling rocks and died 3 died while hiking on Dhaka trail 1 worker dies in a sand and gravel mine 2 died after being hit by falling rocks in a mountain tunnel 1 escaped from the building during the main earthquake and returned 10 minutes later to save her cat. As a result, the house collapsed and she died. In fact, most of the deaths came from mountainous areas. Fortunately, eight French climbers had been rescued just in the morning. However, there are other people in the mountainous areas who have lost contact. I am Taiwanese.I used google translate to translate it from Chinese.

What a miracle for an earthquake of this magnitude to have such disproportional death toll. Taiwanese government doesn't stop taking care of its own people first. I've no doubt the resilient Taiwanese people will bounce back to normal daily lives in no time! Taiwan was able to learn from the last similar earthquake back in 1999 and strengthen building codes in the past few decades to combat such natural disasters. The Taiwanese government has the foresight to prepare its people for what's to come.
  • stay strong sovereign country Taiwan we love you and praying for you - love from USA 🇺🇸🇹🇼🫶

Many years ago, I was traveling across the mountains in Taiwan from the East Coast (Hualien) to West Coast (Taichung) when an earthquake hit and a landslide filled the road in front of us with huge boulders, stranding us. It was about 6-7 hours before a bulldozer came and cleared the road so we could continue the journey - but thinking about it - that was actually a very quick rescue! Taiwan can be a very laid-back place, but it is also efficient when it's important.

As a local, I’m shocked that BBC has a reporter come here in a country area. May peace and safety stay with all kind people.
  • Prayers to the Taiwan people who’ve affected by the earthquake, hopefully the worst will come to pass and they can recover, restore and rebuild soon 🙏🏻🇹🇼

Wishing Taiwan a safe and speedy recovery! I'm praying for everyone who has been affected by these tragic events .
  • Some news outlets reported it as 7.2 magnitude while others reported it as 7.4 magnitude . Why is there a discrepancy?
  • I am so sorry for people who are hurt and impacted by the earthquakes. I couldn’t help but noticed that the surrounding buildings of the tilted one remain standing. And how does the rest part of the tilted building remains intact after hundreds of aftershocks? The resilience of Taiwanese people is amazing!
