A tip ceases to be a tip when it becomes expected. I think the same idea applies to workers. Tips should be a reward for excellent service not an expected part of overall compensation. Pay workers a fair wage and stop relying on customers to contribute directly to their compensation.
  • Gideons: it’s not a restaurant. Why would they work for tips? It’s a shop. I don’t go to Dunkin’ Donuts and tip the person who hands me the donut that is sitting in the case waiting for me to buy it anymore than I expect to tip the cashier who scans my onions.
  • Virtual queue needs to go away. If I spend $110 to get in the park And have travelled hundreds of miles, I should assured that I can get in a particular ride.
  • It's INSANE that the employees at Gideon's are paid as tipped employees. Sure, tip if you feel like it, when I visited there I had great service from everyone, but that is not a place that I would consider as a normal place to tip. By that I mean something like a sit down restaurant. So to pay them as such is a joke and makes me think very poorly of the Gideon's company (not even considering all of the other issues mentioned). That place makes more than enough money to pay all of the employees a living wage (well beyond $16/hr) yet they found a loophole to only pay them $8 because they can legally get away with it, something all companies can and will do whenever possible. I'm glad you talked about this here to bring attention to it because I wasn't aware of this and I think it's important to bring it more publicity.

Disney took an already broken pass holder preview system and made it even more ridiculous, not only do you have to get a park reservation but then you have to take a chance to actually get the virtual queue on the day of, Disney needs to stop with this stuff it’s getting ridiculous, if you have a pass holder preview have a standby line and let people wait end of story simple and it works
  • Thanks for informing about Gideon’s. There seems to be a huge disparity between management claims and employees.
  • We went to Knotts a few months ago. No phones. It was BLISS. It's how parks SHOULD ALWAYS be. Came to L.A. from Oz and didn't even bother going to Disney. Spent 4 days at Knotts and had a fabulous relaxing time.

There is so much space for a long stand by que at the former splash mountain, I don't really understand the need for the virtual que.

If Gideon’s is unable to fairly compensate staff, treat them with respect, and keep them safe and comfortable then they should not be allowed to operate.
  • Ive genuinely never got the Gideon's hype they're so ultra sweet the cookies just aren't enjoyable. Hope the staff get the support they deserve!

Most of us work and had no chance of securing a reservation for the passholder preview.

My Horrible Disney Experience Queue... lol
  • It's silly to take a ride that is going to push people through the same way the old Splash Mountain did and now make people fight for a spot in the same line or pay extra for it. 😡

It's very simple, a tip is for someone who creates something or offers an actual service that goes above and beyond. If you're grabbing a premade item from a case, no you don't deserve a tip. That's the job.
  • @_Beenis
if I am standing while I order, I don't tip
  • @DisAmy33
The one time I went inside Gideons, all the employees were short & seemed unhappy, I guess I now know why, they definitely need to shut the doors or limit hours to address these issues and operate like a real company if they plan to continue business, all this sounds pretty shameful and example of greedy & poor management imo.
  • @loribelknap8101
Why should you tip at Gideons. It is Not a restaurant , you don’t seat down and they come and take your order and bring you anything. It’s like tipping at McDonalds or Walmart. The tipping has gotten out of hand.
  • @dhfsnow
It’s amazing how tone deaf Disney Management is to the bad taste they have created by forcing these stupid services on out of town guests who deal with the stress created by Genie Plus and virtual ques.
