Traveling to officially the happiest country in the World on 2023 and for the last 6 years running.
Welcome to Finland (or Suomi), a country in northern Europe, famous for its cold climate and polar nights, it has consistently been named the most happy country on Earth.
Nestled high up in Scandinavia, Finland is somewhere we have wanted to travel to for a long time, in order to find out why people here are so happy? What is it about life in Finland and in the Nordic countries of Scandinavia that is so good?
Finland, alongside its neighbour Denmark, has consistently topped the United Nations’ most prestigious poll, The World Happiness Report, in all six areas of life satisfaction: income, healthy life expectancy, social support, freedom, trust and generosity. It has always fascinated us what separates these Scandinavian countries from the rest of our planet.
We traveled to Helsinki, on a boat from Tallinn, Estonia, to stay with our friends. They moved to Espoo, a suburb of Helsinki a year ago, and with their help we wanted to try and learn more about life here in Finland and what makes it so special.
It can't be all because of the saunas, right? ;)

What do you think makes the Nordic countries so happy? 🤔
  • @sampohonkala4195
Finland does not have a socialist government and is not located in Scandinvia, other than that quite accurate. Helsinki area is great in the summer especially because of the Baltic sea, beaches, rocks and islands so conveniently a walking distance from the center. The happiness is based on realistic expectations and a good chance to succeed fairly well in life, no matter what your background is. People have fair opportunities and even if you totally fail, you will still not end up in the street (well some still do, homelessness will be eradicated by 2027 if and when the current trend continues).

A little perspective about the dark winters. Helsinki has one hour less daylight than Edinburgh on the shortest day.
  • In my town in Indiana the local public library has 3D printers, laser printers, FAX machines, music rooms, meeting rooms, special areas for kids, etc. You can rent DVD and Blue Rays as well as books on tape and braille books. Almost all of it is free. You have to pay for the consumables for the printers, pay for the FAXs, and a few other things, but otherwise it's all free. When I first went to it, I was pleasantly shocked. It is amazing. Kind of like a smaller version of the Helsinki library. Thanks for the video - wonderful stuff!
  • Finland are built with more love for the finnish people than what is done in other nations. That is the reason. The typical finnsh mentality is melancolic but they are still in general more happy for the reason I wrote. I am Swedish and my government does not love the Swedish people as much. Basically Finland is a very good country. I hope that the current government in Sweden will make Sweden better but for that we have to wait and see.

Nice video, all in all. Just one minute correction: Finland is not in Scandinavia, technically speaking. Scandinavia is the peninsula formed by Sweden & Norway. The correct term that includes Finland is "Fennoscandia". There, the nit has been picked, so to speak :D

It seems that people have a lack of worry there thanks to their government and that contributes greatly to their happiness. That library is beautiful and what a wonderful place to socialize!

I can understand why Finns are happy. It's safe - I think the crime rate is the lowest in the world, and as the guy said, things work, people have a social conscience and choose to buy local produce rather than imported stuff (carbon footprint). Well done to Finland and the Finns.

Thanks for the video, guys. I live in Norway , and it's almost the same here, except for the obsession with the Sauna. It's pure Finnish!

Finland isn't a socialist country, it's a Parlimentary Republic, it has some policies that can be considered socialist in nature, just like the UK which also isn't a socialist country.

If you really find it hard to understand, then read: The 4 seasons. The seasons create a sense of renewal and progress that never wavers. The darkness teaches us to come to terms with things we cannot change :) But the winter can be a challenge, and it doesn't directly create happiness, not the euphoric kind. But it has us thinking deeply about what life means to us. A troubled past full of famine and poverty, which is finally gone. So there is a tendency to be happy about the little things in life, like the sound of birds, or freshly picked mushroom. Also this is why you don't see a lot of crszy fiestas or euphoric parades. It's not required, not yet. There is still some melancholia stemming from our past. Also we have peace and calm, and things work. For the time being. But it shouldn't be taken for granted.

Finns are awesome & Metal culture is a pure sense of life if you believe in it, Sonata Artica, Battle Beast, Children of Bodom, Stratovarius are just a few that Finland have produced 🍻🤘🤘🤘

I was in Helsinki in June visiting a friend! The library is truly amazing isn't it! I think it is true that the functionality, reliability and stability of the country and its systems plays a big role in the people's wellbeing.
  • @eeetuman
The reasons I like this country, are not so overcrowded cities, public transport in city areas and great library system. Also nature, which is most greatest at summer and autumn. I personally like our heavy metal/ rock bar culture, thanks for showing that Bodom- bar. i have to visit there someday.
  • @Starlingus
Respecting the Nature. It's out church and source of power.

I love Finland, one of the reasons is that's where the band Nightwish is from :)
  • @fortuna7469
Fantastic video, thank you! Nastya and Ilya nailed everything perfectly. Greetings and all the best from Helsinki! ❤

I think you have nailed many possible explanaitions. I have yet another possible one. For a long time Finland used to be a poor colonial province that was hit regularly by famines, warfare, some oppression etc. Independence, industrialization, peace, stabillity, higher incomes etc are pretty new to Finland. The past is still not too far away and has not fallen into oblivion quite yet. Perhaps for that reason the mere fragrance of a flower can generate a deep sense of gratitude. Gratitude for just being alive, for having a country to call ones own, for being able to grow flowers and just for their beauty.
