BE NOT AFRAID
By Bob Dufford, SJ
(Includes the fourth verse that Bob Dufford wrote in 2007.)

v1. You shall cross the barren desert
but you shall not die of thirst.
You shall wander far in safety
though you do not know the way.
You shall speak your words to foreign lands
and all will understand.
You shall see the face of God and live.

R. Be not afraid.
I go before you always.
Come follow Me
and I will give you rest.

v2. If you pass through raging waters
in the sea, you shall not drown.
If you walk amidst the burning flames
you shall not be harmed.
If you stand before the pow'r of hell
and death is at your side,
know that I am with you, through it all. /R

v.3 Blessed are your poor
for the Kingdom shall be theirs.
Blest are you that weep and mourn
for one day you shall laugh.
And if wicked men insult and hate you
all because of Me,
blessed, blessed are you! /R

v.4 And when the earth has turned beneath you
and your voice is seldom heard.
When the flood of gifts that blessed your life
has long since ebbed away.
When your mind is thick and hope is thin
and dark is all around,
I will stand beside you till the dawn. /R

  • When we look back at 2020 and all that we achieved and the many blessings we received - despite the many challenges and losses - this video is definitely at the top of the list. May it continue to bless you and give you hope as we approach then end of the tunnel.

I am so alone and afraid during my last stage of life because of my cancer. This song has given me comfort and peace.

I played this song for my wife....few weeks before she passed 1.13.24 from breast and brain cancer......She's gone, but I know she's in Heaven because of her deep faith.....I was present for her passing....washed her feet...crossed her arms...closed her eyes and read Bible passages we agreed on....weeks before ❤.....I miss you Michelle
  • I have Multiple Sclerosis and suffering and this song gives me hope in Jesus 😢❤

I’m sitting by the bedside of my husband. We’ve been together 40 years. He is my love, my life. He had a heart attack 3 days ago. He was standing right next to me in our kitchen. I started CPR and my son was able to take over until EMS arrived. I begged with every ounce of my being for God to spare him and give me more time..to tell him how much I love him..my granddaughter and son and I, huddled together in prayer and one of the firemen bowed his head with us..they got a pulse and here we are, his brain function is 100 percent. Thank you Jesus. Never in my life was I so immediately filled with fear..and I immediately took it to Jesus. God is good and and the miracles are abundant. We are never together at that hour of the day..he had been to town, out on the ranch, fed the animals..etc. but, he was right there beside me..and my son who is never home was right there..Be not afraid…thank you for this gift of song..all of you. 🙏 ❤️ 🕊️
  • How beautiful, I have always loved this song! I was a practicing Catholic all my life, active in so many aspects of the parish, I found myself at church more than home. The one thing that I loved so much was choir and cantoring.. In 1993, I suffered a mental breakdown and still have been unable to handle any commitments where I have to be somewhere at a certain time. I am now 70 years old and hearing this song this morning, well, it touched my very soul. I felt like my grandmother, mother, father, aunts, all who have passed on, felt like they were reaching out to me to not be afraid.
  • We played this for my grandmother as she went to be home with God. The connection i have with this song is incredible. I love you Ma. Rest with Jesus now!
  • My daughter died 4 years ago. Had this played at her funeral. RIP Helen.
  • So great to see so many people of faith sending such a beautiful message. We're so blessed to be Christians in the Catholic church.

We are One,Holy,Catholic Apostolic Church! Viva Cristo Rey!
  • Two years ago I listened to this song in the car before each radiation treatment. I listened to this beautiful song for 5 weeks. It gave me the hope and strength I needed before entering the facility. This was before Covid boosters were available. It gave me great peace of mind and I still listen to it occasionally. Thank you.

I’ve never felt such understanding love. People like me, Catholics. At times I’m nervous to be Catholic. This song brings me to people like me.

My husband passed away 6 weeks ago tonight and because of the virus we could only have a graveside service for 10 people, including the priest and funeral director. We played this song. The lyrics and melody are so comforting. Thank you for posting.
  • This song breaks my heart because we sang this at my husbands funeral mass. It means so much to me. It’s a beautiful song.
  • @marygr8064
This hymn was sung at my Father’s funeral. He was a servant of God. I pray that I see my Dad when I die. Music has always transcended meaning. I thank God’s grace for me with this hymn. Mary

I am a Catholic, 61 years old and a survivor of Covid-19 and am listening from Indonesia. And my three siblings are also survivors of C19. We all have various impacts and thank you so much to Yeshua and first liners of medical team all over the world for helping us during this horrible disease. Alleluai. And thank you so much for this biblical song.
