Barnes was one of the most skillful English players of all time. And one of the best at his peak with Liverpool.

I saw John Barnes playing against my country (Uruguay) in that England Tour. I was at the Estadio Centenario that night with my friends. Uruguay won 2-0, but I´d never forget how good he was, Even today, I´m sure that if he played from the begining that game against Argentina in 1986, England win. The sad part was all those fucking racist fans that used to insult him just because he was black. One of my favorite players ever.

Barnes was absolutely world class and I still regard him as one of the best wingers the game has seen (let alone Liverpool). Incredible bad luck in the FA Cup though, missed both the '86 and '89 finals, but I think he did play in the loss to Wimbledon
  • Them Brazilian’s didn’t realise that John Barnes had some Jamaican skill full blood in his veins. What a fantastic piece of dribbling. And what a great goal(Wow)⚽️

If England had John Barnes today we'd win tournaments. A player like him is what's missing. What a player, loved him!

Those comparing his performances for Liverpool and England are ignoring (or choosing to ignore) one fact - of his 79 England caps, 31 were earned while he was still at Watford. That is a record for most caps won by a WFC player that he is a joint holder of along with someone he played with, Kenny Jackett of Wales. Strangely, neither of them were born in the country that they played for.

Literally took on the whole defense. RB, CB, CB and LB also went passed a midfielder for good measure. Make no mistake, Brazil have some of the best defenders of all time. Not sure about this team in particular though. Still, it's Brazil!

greatest player of his generation.would have loved to seen digger at his peak playing in europe for liverpool in late eighties post heysel. never got credit he deserved on international front. not too many players nowadays have an international career spanning 12 years and 79 caps

Very Good. Someone who knows Football. The Liverpool of the 70's and 80's were the domineering force in English Football.
