In this special episode of Bondi Vet, we sent Dr Alex Hynes to Adelaide to help efforts to rescue and care for animals impacted by the Australian bushfires.

Dr Alex visited a temporary emergency hospital set up to look after more than 100 koalas that are either orphaned, displaced or injured from one of the worst impacted areas, Cudlee Creek, where at least 25,000 koalas are thought to have perished in bushfires.

People can rebuild their homes but these animals can’t.

I'm sorry for all the people who's lost everything. I do, however, feel even more sorry for the animals, because they can't just move anywhere and rebuild. So many lives lost. So many precious animals hurt or killed. Absolutely heartbroken. And I want to thank a for donating time an knowledge to helping. And money for saving all that can be saved.

I could never be a vet, I couldn't stand losing an animal.

Look at all those gorgeous koalas! This is wonderful, what’s being done.

I’m glad they finally made people aware of the plight of the animals. Here in the US we’ve had wildfires for the past several years and not once did I hear them talk about the animals. I’m so glad I’m starting to hear more and more that here in the US we have vets, wildlife careers, etc. who are going over to Australia to help with the animals. Now if they can only get some slow steady rain for a couple of months. 🕷

Those koalas are the most domesticated wildlife I have seen. To allow humans to handle them, feed them... very easy going. Not even many domesticated cat patients behave so nicely. I do wish the vet nurses got more credit. We can do everything vets do except diagnose, prescribe tx, surgery, and prognosis. All treatments, labs, monitoring, emergency calls, and assisting done by vet nurses.

We've been watching this all transpire, feverishly, from here in the U.S. We've had our share of problems with raging fires over the last few year, but NOTHING like this. It is beyond heartbreaking to see it, especially the affects on the beautiful wildlife. We've shed tears, seeing it all. Wishing all our two--legged and four-legged and no-legged friends in Australia a quick release and recovery.

I still can't got over just how many Koalas along with other wildlife has been lost due to someone's stupidity. May God look after those that survived the fires.
