Colorado Problems

Published 2024-03-01
Despite snow on the ground along north facing hillsides, the Colorado Front Range has seen Red Flag Warnings issued for low humidity, gusty winds and dry fuels. SMFR Firefighters recently assisted our Douglas County neighbors at Larkspur Fire Rescue with a 150 acre vegetation fire in their district. In this vlog we take viewers to a unique event where Hazmat Teams from across the Denver area gathered for training and showcased their equipment, and to Centennial Airport for ARFF apparatus acceleration testing on the runway. We share the first images of Tiller 34 being built, introduce our new PIO Makenzie, and share patch shout outs!

  • The tender filling up the helicopter is amazing! It's great to get a first person look at that.
  • Can’t wait to see the tiller going through the testing grounds at the Public Safety Training Center here in Appleton!! I work at the airport right next door, KATW and drive by the testing grounds every day.

Welcome, McKenzie! Hope to meet you soon. I went through the SMFR Citizens Academy in 2018, and these videos are always very interesting.

Nice to meet McKenzie your latest PIO. Sounds like she has a lot of experience in front of the camera and reporting so I am sure she will be a great asset to SMFR. Nice to see HazMat joining forces to be very effective in handling those types of situations. Looking forward to SMFR adding new apparatus to the fleet and getting a sneak peek as well. Great video.

talking about the winter wildfires... we do have them over here as well (and it is the second highest risk season that we have especially now with no more fully covered snow areas) a lot of dry brush and vegetation in winter puts it to higher risk levels, the only difference being that there is often icy roads when it is winter wildfire season now (and yes, a lot of people forget that fact in winter when just because it is cold doesn't make it less flamable when it comes to materials) so yeah, luckily this time we didn't have any larger fires in our vegetation... but still quite a few smaller ones during winter

You did correctly say Vedauwoo. It is a Native American name for a grouping of rock formation between Laramie and Cheyenne Wyoming off of I-80. It is Romanized Arapaho meaning earth-born. Pretty cool place to go and hike and rock climb in my opinion.

  • I'm so excited that Vedauwoo patch made it, and you guys even ponounced Vedauwoo correctly!
