Sweet Sixteen: The Original Hot Wheels Cars of 1968 - Episode 1 of 4

Publicado 2021-04-09
“Sweet Sixteen: The Original Hot Wheels Cars of 1968” revisits the launch of Hot Wheels cars, and collector Gary Nabors walks the viewer though each of the sixteen models. All the original cars were based upon real cars of the time - some were hot rod versions of cars being produced by the big auto manufacturers like Chrysler, Ford, GM and Volkswagen, some were based on exotic full-sized show cars, one was a purpose-built race car for the track, and the last one was a scale model of Hot Wheels designer Harry Bradley’s own customized 1964 Chevy El Camino. A wide array of the original cars is featured in the film, which focuses on what today’s collectors look for among these classic toy cars.

  • I was born in 1960 and loved Matchbox cars and trucks. When Hot Wheels came out I never got another Matchbox. Hot Wheels were the bomb!

I grew up in Inglewood in the mid to late 60's, as kids we would "dumpster dive" the Mattel trash bins and literally would bring home boxes of diecast rejects from these early days. We moved in 1970 and my parents made me throw them away, can't even imagine what they would be worth now!!!
  • the slogan of Hot Wheels really suprised me, and knew that they really are the fastest metal cars in the world, and still are to this very day
  • I remember going to church with my best friend on a Wednesday night once and we took Hot Wheels and rolled them in a pew the whole time. 🤣

If we had a Time Machine and went back to 1968 and bought ALL the Hot Wheels for about a dollar a piece, we would be billionaires today. The percentage increase in value of these is unreal.

My Splitten' Image was blue. I had The Red Baron too which was one of my faves as well as the Paddy Wagon.....can't forget Snake/Mongoose or the '39 coupe light blue with the power house.
  • The 1968 Corvette hit the showrooms September 1967. We're Hot Wheels on the pegs by then?

Are you okay man. It looks like you're being held at gunpoint, and being forced to read this script. Blink twice if you need help.

I still love building race sets like the 1969- 1970's ones and racing these original Hot Wheels....even through my Super Charger Really don't collect them for the money Just never understood why these adults do that?
  • Loved learning about some of the history behind these classic designs. Need a hypothetical prototype of the Panda model!

Interesting and good info. Thank you. However, there's way too much screen time showing the narrator, rather than the cars - the reason we watch it.
  • 4:52 Those boxes that the matchbox cars came in look cool. Sadly kids didn't like those. shame really. Imagine Hot Wheels doing that? I would buy it no matter the design but the Matchbox boxes are simple
