Made an impromptu visit to this railfan hotspot on this lovely mild winter day. Saw plenty of freight and passenger action here. All trains identified

Every time I see a gauntlet track I think of that 1950 Rockville Centre crash on the LIRR that killed like 30-some people. I believe they were removing the grade crossings back then and had to create a gauntlet track to run the regular trains. And later on that year, there was an even deadlier crash in Kew Gardens.

My father was a railway fan and took me for train spotting before I was ten years old, fifty years ago in the early seventies. What a great remembrance. Much later we swapped the roles, but never gave up that obsession. Even silent tracks have got that special something when there is no train anywhere in sight. Only some people can understand this. Thanks for sharing your videos.

Well done! Fantastic footage. That is a really busy line.
  • Another great upload! I love watching these videos and I appreciate the little tidbits of info you throw in!! Looking forward to more :)
  • Nice shots! Union is a pretty good spot. But when I'm here I usually stand west of the station where a gravel road adjacent to the tracks gives me some space between the trains and myself and the views aren't obstructed by all the stuff on the platform. I also like like the low-level angle better. And I've asked a few people and no, it's not trespassing.

Another great video. Look like someone forgot to hit the switch on that last freight, right up next to the platform
  • 25:50 I was on 5735 yesterday, riding in a vestibule near the front, so I was well positioned to say those double PL42's only smelled slightly better than the garbage train. Those two have been working together for months and I can only assume from the smell of things that they're working together because one has some kind of engine fault that makes it consume a lot of oil.
  • Wow, the number of trains that go by remind me of Elwood Blues apartment in the Blue Brothers.
  • My family lived a couple blocks away from the Roselle Park Station (next station to the S/W) and my dad is a Kean alumnus. Thanks so much for giving me a glimpse of things long-forgotten!!!
  • Great railfanning spot!! Good mix of passenger and freight trains. And I would wear sunglasses on a bright, sunny day!! Thanks Tim๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ’š

Very nice video! Looked like CSX M403 was using the inner set of rails coming through the station. 32:17
