There have been many changes in the engine for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild vs. Tears of the Kingdom. So we wanted to take a side-by-side look at some of those changes between each engine. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom does some interesting things to make the game look a lot smoother, while some effects for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild hold up incredibly well also. Take a look at both in this graphics comparison.

  • it’s insane how tears of the kingdom makes breath of the wild, one of the best games on switch (and arguably of all time) feel like an unfinished beta test

There’s much less haze in the background in tears of the kingdom. Botw had a lot of haze as you looked in the distance
  • @KEE_Wii
It feels like there is quite a lot more going on in the background of BotW but it’s obvious the shading and foreground in TotK is much improved.

It would greatly benefit the comparisons if you'd capture both at the same in-game time of day. To have lighting conditions be as simular as possible. Same weather type too.

Both games are utterly amazing graphically for such limited hardware.
  • @JalapenoPrime
You can definitely tell they put that enormous 3.5gb of ram to use

Some places better textures, some places no real difference, and more reflective surfaces for TotK it seems

Texture resolution, object density, draw distance, LOD switches, lighting. A bunch is noticeable.

The main thing ive notieced is the framerate is much better in busy areas in totk. Seems to be solid 30 in both Kakariko and Korok Forest, Also the sound quality is amazing with surround sound. Leaps ahead of botw.
  • The world of Totk just feels more alive than botw, its not all about the graphics. Game looks great!!
  • @neloviolence
This makes me want a mod for the classic Zelda theme music playing in the overworld
  • @dekifx
Idk why does it feels wrong looking at the bokoblins without the big totk horns😂
  • @Nipahnan
My biggest complain about TotK would be the constant fade ins of objects even when they’re super close, it’s also noticeable in this video where all of a sudden a bunch of bokoblins & stones appear, otherwise TotK looks and feels so much lively compared to botw :)
  • Totk is clearly superior: Higher poly count, sharper image and better lighting system.

where did you get the music you put for the background? I'd love to be able to give it a listen
  • Dev teams take notes, you dont need a huge jump in graphical fidelity in order to set the bar high

In totk it looks like there’s more contrast with the shading, while the lighting is simplified in return. So it doesn’t look better or worse, it’s more of just preference.
