I am in my late 20s and this is my first time living alone, I was with my ex for 6 whole years (from 21-27 and before that I lived with my parents) so we lived together and always split the bills. I truly didn't realize how hard it would be paying everything myself until now, it truly is a struggle and every paycheck goes towards rent and utilities. I hardly ever have money left over for other basic expenses like groceries and household essentials and not to mention the other things I'd like to splurge on every once in a while. it truly is a struggle, feels amazing to know I'm not alone!

I am in a skilled nursing and rehab facility for medical treatment and therapy for an arthritic left leg, and I'm making tremendous progress here. I have been in this nursing and rehab facility since December of 2019, just three months before the pandemic hit right here in Pennsylvania, where I live at. And I am ready to get out of here. Just like anybody else, I too am having a hard time trying to find an apartment as well. To me, apartment hunting not the same as was it was back in the 80's and 90's; when I last looked at apartments. Talk about greedy landlords and property management companies, they want your monthly income to be 3 to 3 1/2 the monthly rent, and I just don't have it. My Social Security Disability income comes here to the nursing facility, along with Medicaid, to help pay for my care here. Thirty percent of my SSDI means that I would be paying 1990's prices for monthly, and I just can't afford what they're charging for rent today. In fact, most of the apartments in Philly that are in my price range are in the bad neighborhoods, and I don't want to live in any of those neighborhoods! I personally feel that this is discrimination against low-income people, and that's not right! I also have rental applications at some of these subsidized places for senior citizens and the disabled as well. However, you are on a waiting list from anywhere between two to five years on average. In fact, one place I called has a 7-9 year waiting list. And another place that I contacted has a 5 to 10-year waiting list as well. I mean, that is ridiculous! They also want you to have good credit as well, plus they check your background for criminal history and previous rent payments as well. I was turned down for three subsidized apartments and two regular apartments because of my bad credit, and it's not my fault that it got that way! I worked at these call centers on and off for 35 years, and the work wasn't always that stable. It was temporary project work, and I was periodically unemployed. Even when I was working, I wasn't making enough money in order for make ends meet. I also had to turn down two subsidized apartments due to safety issues. I have to have a place just like I have here at the nursing facility. Which means I have to have a place that has automated doors that I can get in and out of; especially since I'm a wheelchair with limited mobility. Plus, the building also has to have an elevator, a walk-in shower, grab bars on both the walk-in shower and on the toilet; and it has to be on the lowest floor possible just in case of an emergency such as either a fire or else a medical emergency. And it has to be in a decent neighborhood as well. Plus, it has to be a place where I can afford the rent. And that's the bottom line. When I was admitted here to the nursing facility, I had to give my last apartment, where I lived at for 20 years because of my limited ability and safety issues. Even though it was built back in 1965 (when I was just an 8-year-old kid), it is not ADA-compliant. And I will not live in a place like that either. As tough as it is, I am not going to give up until I find me a suitable place for me to live at.

Do you think even if I talk to my apartment office even on the 3rd when it becomes late after midnight that day that they’d maybe still be willing to work with me? Cause idk how much my check will be tomorrow night but I know it’s not going to fully cover rent due to having to miss like half my work hours on that check

That’s where I am is a job change… I had to change my job because the school work load is insane.

This is a shame, got money for everything else but rent. Perhaps do a tutorial on putting money aside to save for the hard times in life.
