President Biden hosts Kenya’s president Ruto for a state visit | Inside Story

Published 2024-05-24
Washington rolled out the red carpet for Kenya's President William Ruto. The two countries are marking 60 years of diplomatic relations. They are promising to strengthen those ties, starting with security co-operation. President Ruto reiterated his commitment to sending a thousand police officers to help restore order in Haiti. The visit is also important for broader US-Africa relations. Washington appears to be playing catch-up on the continent. China has invested heavily in infrastructure and Russia has increased its military presence after a series of coups in recent years. Can Washington fulfil its new promises? How could African countries benefit?

Presenter: Folly Bah Thibault

Stella Agara -- Governance and security analyst who specialises in youth development
David Shinn -- Professor of International Relations at George Washington University and former U.S. ambassador to Burkina Faso and Ethiopia

"Here's a few million, and you're very important to us...cough we need your country's resources cough cough cough"
  • I hope Kenya is aware that this is a strategy to keep Africa divided...Ruto is a sellout!
  • Flipflop Ruto!! Isn't he the one who called african countries to stop using the dollar?

Kenya run as far as you can before you get trapped.

Joke's 😂. This 🤡 doesn't know he's being used. After Africa's history with the west, he of all people should have known better.
  • Kenya is taking advantage of it's position in the geopolitical space in the region. Why do so many people think Ruto is blind, when he already can sense desperation by US to claw back from what the Chinese have achieved
  • @livisonmanyika
Do what you can to deliver Kenyans to prosperity Ruto ✨️

Russia is at war with Ukraine but still have military in Africa. Kenya has only a few 😂cattle runners. We are leaving somalia because we.have suppressed terrorists. We are black Africans deploying in black Haiti. Wagner and Russia are not Africans or African brothers.

Contrary to David Shinn's claim, it is not unusual for "Western" countries to use African security or armed forces outside of the African continent. The colonial European nations used Africans to fight and die for their cause in World War 2 and they never quite gave them credit for their contributions. Furthermore, the U.S.'s assisting of Kenya to fight Al Shabab in Somalia is not a charity. It is a self-serving endeavor to reign in extremists in the African Horn that pose a threat to the United States' interests.
  • We don't need Kenya to Haiti, we can do it own ourselves, no Kenya. My question, who created the violence in Haiti?
  • @Watema23
Why does the US forget that Ruto said he wants to boycott the use of dollar.
  • For U.S. to talk about fighting for human rights IS like a mosquito talking about treating malaria.
