Published 2020-04-25
I go over the basics of brazing a rear cage together in this video, featuring the RC4WD C2X. This is definitely for beginners, but should get you started in the fun that is brazing!

Check your local welding supply, or hardware store (or Amazon) for all your brazing tools I mention in this video.

"Should always have somebody around that knows what theyre doing" instant throwback to my best mate and myself at 10 years old grinding and welding together our own go kart powered by my mates old quad bike with not an adult in sight 😂

You had me at “That’s the puppy!”. Cool video.. I’ve never considered doing that but what a great resource if I ever do. Thank you!
  • @4sidebars
@ 6:10 you can see the backround plastics starting to melt XD

I’ve tried brazing but I suck at it. I’m not giving up on it because I love the feeling of taking materials and making something cool and/or useful out of them. I’ve done it on my Chevy Apache project truck quite a bit and I want to bring it to 10th scale for myself as well. I have access to a welder to make all of the stuff I want to, but it’s a half hour away and I’d rather be in my shop where I’m most comfortable and can learn at my own pace. This video will definitely help me make some cool stuff for my rigs, so thanks a ton!
  • That’s cool.i haven’t brazed in years.i did it before I could weld.im going to try it on my next project.also you can get line benders that are like pliers.you can get a tighter bend.

I use a micro torch. It's great for getting the heat into tight places and keeping it away from places you don't want it. Also a chainsaw sharpening stone for use in a dremel is great for shaping the ends of the tubes for a no gap fit. In the end your joints will be stronger and look better than ones with large gaps filled in with silver solder which itself is expensive especially when you have to use twice as much to fill gaps in your joints.
  • Nice video Matt! I do have all that that you did show plus I have the Little Smiths torch. I love it! Nice flame size and percise brazing. It pretty much on heats up at the spot your trying to braze.

Always been something I fancied tackling..... now I may just have to. Excellent advice, I love your approach to everything Rc.

In the scale world brazing can look more scale and clean over welding. I’ve been welding all of my metal creations but I’d love to try brazing. Thanks for a great video!
  • @cjboa
You got it pretty much in a nut shell. I was a pro brazer in a ship yard for years and you covered the basics
  • @rickschock4642
Very much enjoyed the video on how to braze for RC crawlers. That is something I haven't tried yet and would like to give a go. Thanks!
  • @smokeyrc9070
Awesome video I've watched a few braising videos but after this one I think I might try it. You showed me everything that I need from a beginners perspective to go and start right away with minimal investment.
  • ... Just addicted to your Videos today, Matt!! I've seen this one a few times before, but I always go back to it. When I've got a proper Work Area again, I'm definitely trying this! For years as a Mechanic, I've Brazed on a much larger scale (real Car Exhaust and such). I've never tried it in small scale, but it looks doable. Thanks for inspiring!!! 😉 Carmine ✈🚂🚙

“...that’s you” Pup: “what kind of sorcery is this... I’m out”. I’d say your cage came out pretty sweet. I was thinking of recreating the Smittybuilt double tube roll bar, bumpers and sliders I had on my ‘Yota out of plastic but this has changed my mind. Time to get the torch out, now where the heck did I put that scrap tubing...

Good stuff! I started brazing today, found a dusty old set up that was used by former shop personnel a few years back. (Oxy Acetalin) super lucky and stoked to get to learn with this legit set up. I successfully brazed up some .250 stainless rod and made an effective and decent looking bash bar for the scx10.2. Learned a lot from your video, really appreciate it! You have a good personality for YouTubing holy cow! Awesome, hopefully we get to meet at an upcoming industry event this year!
  • @JDMJDK
I need to get into brazing again. I did plenty of it in metal shop class 20+yrs ago. Great video as always!! 🏁💯
  • @MrsRabbit8
Thank you, much appreciated! I need to make a specialized bumper for my scx24. This video helped me say YES, I can do that!
  • @datboy5009
I would so do this to an on road car chassis for the scale look. I’ve seen people use styrene but I think this might be even better and more accurate
  • @Docdug
Matt - thanks for posting this! I’m gonna try my hand at cage work on my next build, a SCX10 II for Axialfest! Cheers Doc
  • I've been wanting to build a custom cage for my newest build, and was about to look it up, and this was in my recommendation list, thanks Matt, candy wait for the next live stream takeover next week
