Primitive pottery replication test firing process

Published 2023-08-25
Hello fellow pottery replicators ! I made this video to describe how I test wild clays, slips, mineral paints, and organic paints before I actually use gathered material to make my Mimbres pottery replicas in an actual wood firing.

  • Thanks Jeff, this is really helpful. Your explanation makes sense and it looks like a good set up. I can see that I need to upgrade what I do. "Authentic" primitive pottery is a great thing but sometimes tools like your weed burner kiln make pottery more accessible. I will leave a link in my most recent video so people can see what you are doing.

Thanks so much for making this. It is really useful. I had noticed your kiln set up in the pictures you shared at the kiln conference, and I saved screen shots for future reference for when i make my own. This was much better than the two blurry pictures i saved ;-) . I wasnt at the kiln conference, just watched your presentation a couple of times on Andys Wards site.

Hi Jeff..Nice set up and info on your test pieces , small and compact. ive made a large oil drum Raku Kiln, but never used it yet..got drawn into the ancient pottery method first..its a bit big and will consume to much gas for small bowls. on the look out for a small drum i can convert.
