In this tutorial, we'll walk through the process step by step to enable you to install DaVinci Resolve in Linux using the official installer. This method works for most Debian-based Linux systems.

IMPORTANT!!
It is recommended to take a system snapshot using an app like Timeshift before proceding because this process doesn't work 100% of the time and removing all of the files that are installed can be tricky.

Some of the Debian based Linux distros:
● Ubuntu 16+ ● Pop!_OS
● Debian ● Zorin
● Linux Mint ● AV Linux
● Elementary ● Deeepin
● KDE Neon ● MX Linux
● Peppermint OS ● (and many more)

NOTE: In the video I've used the AppImageLauncher application to integrate the AppImage file that is generated during the process.

Also, I have already installed the latest NVIDIA GPU drivers for my system. There is information on Daniel Tufvesson's webpage about how to install NVIDIA drivers & the NVIDIA encode library for h.264 & h.265 exporting. See link below.

  • What's your experience? How usable is it on linux? I'm considering buying the studio version (for h264/265), but i have heard that it still crashes often.
  • Great and easy to follow tutorial. This is the closest Ive been to getting resolve to run on my system. Unfortunately I get an error when starting. (Unsupported GPU Processing Mode) Please review the GPU drivers and gpu configuration under preferences. Is this because i don't rune an nvidia gpu? how can i fix this. I have a dual boot system running both linux mint and windows 10 and I can run reslove on windows with the same hardware.

what should I do if it i got all the way to starting davinci resolve up for the first time and I got the message "DaVinci Resolve could not initialize OpenGL. Please ensure that the latest graphics drivers are installed." my computers a lattitude chromebook 5400 if that helps at all
  • @oldcodger
Well crafted video, thanks. Unfortunately on my ZorinOS system, although I can launch Davinci, successfully, neither mp4 or mov clips render video when added to the media pool. Looks like CODECS are missing. Any hints on a fix? I have zero issues like this with KdenLive or PITIVI on the same system.
  • @trinity5150
With my install I have tried to load Davinci Resolve and it doesn't even get to the splash screen. All the drivers are up to date and there were no errors during the install. I don't know if it matters that I'm running Ubuntu Studio 23.10.
  • @shtreben
how to change disk to installation ?
  • If one buys the full version do they have to repeat the entire process again?
