We kick off Season 11 with the incredible story of the retail “granddaddy of them all” Walmart, and its founder Sam Walton. Once you study Walmart, you realize just how deep its heritage runs through Amazon and so many iconic modern companies we cover on Acquired. This episode was an absolute blast, and we even uncovered a new addendum to the hallowed “focus on what makes your beer taste better” playbook theme!

  • A 3 hour episode on just Walmart. It’s like getting trapped in a huge Walmart for 3 hours!
  • Been listening for a few episodes, and I found it extremely informative and interesting. Especially the episodes on TSMC.

Walmart, for management reasons, was a failure in Brazil. This is something that need to be studied. I was there during the assembly of the first store - they basically tried to copy an American store which, obviously, was a fluke. They had to pay millions in late taxes because of wrong processes and equipment in the check outs (I tried to warn them but was rudely dismissed). That being said they were ahead of competitors in supply chain and had a great start. Such a weird thing thy they adopted bad habits of the Brazilian management style and kept the very non flexible American style.

2:08:52 with most walmarts focusing on stupid self check outs now and only usually have maybe 2 lanes open with cashiers, it would make sense for them to do this.

Omg , you sound like Bryan Alvarez from F4 Weekly. He also lives in Seattle. LOL PS: this auto play for me.
  • Growing up in Missouri Walmart was king, my wife is from Minnesota and Target was king. It’s interesting to the dynamic between the two. Even now.

Amazon used to be convenient with 2 days shipping included, after covid no mas...🤔🤔 I know people dropping the amazon yearly fee due to that.

Sams employees are way more friendly than costco. I like the clientele at sams stores as well. Costco shoppers can be snooty..😉🤔 Sams also has a plus membership. 2% on everything you buy plus more if you have their CC. Free shipping. 5% back on gas. Amazing!!

2:03:23 with Walmarts HUGE investment in their Brick n Mortar store, maybe they seen the online business as a threat to that?
  • Can’t forget about the automobile evolving from glorified horses. A store footprint can get bigger.
