  • I actually had a young teen in my ER with a tapeworm that her mother knowingly gave her daughter to help her lose weight. She couldn’t understand why we called social services. Poor kid I hope it turned out okay for her. We treated her for it but the emotional scars I couldn’t help with

The grapefruit, cigarette, and tapeworm diets were all talked about a lot on proED forums back in the day. It’s terrifying to look back on the “heroin chic” days of the 2000s.
  • The cabbage soup diet triggered anorexia in me. I literally stuck to it the entire week, plus I barely ate the cabbage soup. I actually lost weight and kept up the extreme calorie restriction for nearly two years afterwards. I looked skeletal, had horrible stomach pain, and very little energy. I’m doing better now, but I still can’t help but feel fat now, and I miss the “old emaciated” me. It’s pretty messed up.

3:30 "when you're hungry you're supposed to take a nap" That's just describing my poor college life. I was hungry last night, it's raining, & I have no food on my room. I just sleep it out & get the food in the morning.

My godmother did the tapeworm diet. Didn't lose weight and damaged her body.

My husband fought weight issues for years, and one day he decided to eat smaller portions throughout the day, instead of 3 large meals. He lost 50lbs in a short time, and he felt so much better. He couldn't get the weight off his stomach area though, turned out he had heart problems. Eat smaller portions throughout the day, and eat healthier foods is what worked, and getting a check up at the doctor, very important. He was very stubborn in the check up department , unfortunately he did pass away from AML ( a very aggressive Leukemia) in Feb 2020. We will never know if he had just gone to the doctors sooner, if he would of had a better chance of surviving. 4 months from diagnosed to passing away, we miss him so much I can't put it in onto words. 😢

The thing that works well for me is what I call the "can I have a bite?" Diet. I make myself a healthier option than what my family who aren't dieting are eating, and then take literally one or two bites of my husband's food. So I get to taste it but it isn't my main meal. Like tonight was pizza but aside from my bites I had a salad with vinegrette, some cottage cheese and fruit.

As someone in recovery from an ED, and having done and/or considered some of these, THANK YOU for the body positive education as always
  • I don’t smoke anymore! I quit 31 years ago! But when I smoked, I was skinny and hardly ever hungry! But I’d rather be plump then have cancer! Breathing is way more important then being slim!
  • For anyone really looking to lose weight, lifting weights is honestly really helpful. It can boost your metabolism a lot

Tapeworm diet?!🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮 Only the THOUGHT of having worms of any sort in my stomach would make me stay awake and go into freak out mode!
  • @XxxJaneXxx
I lost 120 pound using the my fitness pal app….yes it took a long time but 2 years later I’ve kept it off Moderation!!

When I was in a bad stage of my eating disorder, I would wake up in the middle of the night purely because of intense hunger from not eating enough.. so I can't see how the sleeping beauty diet would even work 😂 that, and it just sounds dumb lol
  • @nrgbunni.
When my uncle was younger he did the watermelon diet and got really sick. On 6th Jan I started taking saxenda and I've gone from 114.5kg down to 106.2kg and I'm so happy. I never used to be overweight until I had a car accident which has made me disabled so I can't exercise much/am sedentary and im on multiple medications that cause weight gain so after 7 years struggling with my weight I'm glad I found something that works
  • The thought of the cotton ball diet made my mouth dry 😂. I remember reading that Judy Garland was put on a cigarette and coffee diet so she could keep the weight off while playing Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz and she was a teenager.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the sunlight/photosynthesis diet. People will act like plants and claim they don't need food. They just go out in the sunlight and photosynthesize to get all their nutrients. Some do an air diet with it too, but differently than what you described. They just breathe in fresh air while photosynthesizing. The one girl who got super popular for looking like a barbie doll claimed she was on these diets and hadn't had food in weeks.
  • @sillyness3456
During the cotton ball diet introduction, I misheard it as cannibal diet and had an idea, why that would be a particularly bad approach.
  • @barbr100
Chewing 100 times would be painful for those of us with TMJ issues😬
  • @mst3kanita
I have this vivid memory of when I was 11 and my mom making the cabbage soup diet soup. Terrible diet, but that's a damn good soup.
  • Remembering that one time I accidentally went on the banana and milk diet for like 2 weeks because it was all I could get myself to eat in that time
