This video has been on my list to edit together for a long time. Witness is a fantastic film, and the barn raising is a definite, and moving, highlight.

Unlike in the theatrical release where Maurice Jarre’s score is done with synthesizers and the music for this scene only covers the first half of the day (until the characters have lunch), the music here is orchestral and covers the entire barn raising.

There are other versions of this score on YouTube (notably the City of Prague Philharmonic one) that include a similar video component, but I hope you enjoy my edit, where I used the Royal Philharmonic version and extracted some of the dialog and other sounds (as well as recreating a few) to make it feel more like it was part of the film.

If you haven’t already, check out some of Maurice Jarre’s other film compositions, which include Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago, The Man Who Would Be King, Jesus of Nazareth, The Year of Living Dangerously, A Passage to India, Ghost, and many many others.

************

Witness (1985), directed by Peter Weir (The Year of Living Dangerously, Dead Poets Society, The Truman Show), and starring Harrison Ford, Kelly McGillis and Lukas Haas, with Jan Rubeš, Danny Glover, Josef Sommer, Alexander Godunov, Patti LuPone and Viggo Mortensen.

Music is “Building the Barn” (Orchestral Version), composed by Maurice Jarre, with Paul Bateman conducting the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (2013).

This sounds more immersive and interesting than the original but I respect Jarre's decision at that time.

Imagine going back in time and telling Viggo that in about fifteen years you'd he'd be Aragorn in a film adaptation of Lord of the Rings... also imagine telling Kelly McGillis she'd one year later have high sex appeal, only to turn gay twenty years later.
