How To WASTE Elite Talent.

The Jaguars wasted the elite talent of their Wide Receiver Calvin Ridley. Sure, he had a decent year if you’re just looking at the numbers, but when diving into the film like we like to do, the Jags played him out of position, which completely ruined his ceiling. Ridley is a great speed, route running wide receiver, but the Jaguars forced him to face the third most press coverage in the NFL, and his high end potential was capped. Why did they do that? This week’s episode uses the coaches all 22 game film to analyze Jacksonville Jaguars Wide Receiver Calvin Ridley.

Alright guys, my dream offensive line has been sent into the ether. Little worried about Druski on the blind side, but I have conviction in my scouting. Who is your dream offensive line? (no NFL boys allowed)

"Speed" is probably the most misunderstood concept by football fans. Most people will look to a guy's 40 time to discern whether or not a player is fast. This metric only informs a players acceleration from a dead stop. It does not measure the most important aspects of playing Speed. For example how quickly can someone throttle down? How much does a guy throttle down before making a cut? Can he cut at full throttle? What's a players terminal velocity or long Speed. All of these examples are far more useful metrics for evaluating play speed. It baffles me that as data becomes more ubiquitous modern scouting has not evolved to create more predictive measurements. Also fans who like to get more granular in the ways they understand the game would love new toys to play with.

The Saints had kind of an unfair advantage having had so many games against Ridley when he was with the Falcons. They know how dangerous he is when he gets a totally free release in single coverage.
  • Also another thing that contributed to this was the horrible O-Line play. You can see Trevor getting pressured before he can do anything on so many plays

As a Jags fan I attribute Calvin Ridleys wasted potential to be a number of things that was plaguing us. 1. TLaw and Ridley were constant on different pages 2. The Jags were notorious for big gains getting turn apart by penalties 3. Ridley had a decent drop issue. Not big but decent 4. Ridley would sometimes give up at the top of the Route. Leading to picks 5. TLaw constantly felt the need to play Hero ball because his offensive line was utter garbage. 6. Because the o line was so trash.... Ridleys route running tree was very limited to deep comebacks
  • @ErickP3768
considering the Jaguars have him 275 million I don’t think they are questioning TLaw.

They tried to fit a square peg (Z receiver) into a round hole (X position) Hopefully the Titans learn from the Jags mistake

I'm convinced the jaguars have been wasting talent everywhere. They have decent players on defense including what should be one of the better LB groups in the NFL yet their defense is slightly above average. This shows how they ruined using ridley and Lawrence took a step back. I think they got a new def coordinator and Brian Thomas JR may be a better fit than Ridley. Maybe they bounce back
  • @andrewfung9340
Wouldn’t Brian Thomas probably be the X I guess not at the start but he’s there
  • You know, as someone who is 6'1 200 lbs, I consider myself a pretty big guy. It's always funny to be reminded I would be teeny tiny next to NFL players.

thank you for the 101 segment! very appreciated, and super clear; love the graphics on it~
  • @teflonjohn4018
Most Jags fans already knew this thats why we needed another wideout at the X to keep Ridley at the Y and Kirk in the slot instead of solely relying on him to do everything.

Great video Alex! I always learn something new from your videos!

Football is such a beautiful sophisticated game I learn something every season. I knew Ridley was disappointing , but never knew it to this extent what I was even watching whenever I watched the Lawrence and Ridley combo flop. Now I got a little bit more to be mindful of when I’m watching games. American football is soo underrated globally
  • @jacobleroux96
Talked a lot about that Browns game and didn’t show the plays Ridley straight up didn’t run routes so he could turn and argue with the ref once the play started
  • Always insightful and always learning something. Great video again

Thank you for this. So many fans/fantasy players claimed Ridley was washed last year, but JAX did not use him correctly at all and he still got 1,000 yards, like you mentioned. Using him as the X negatively impacted his ability to perform. It’s no coincidence that his best games of the season are games in which Zay Jones was healthy and operating as the X.
