When kitted out the new M4 powered iPad Pro can look an awful lot like a MacBook. Even the price will fool you! And yet as Jonathan explains, it is most definitely still an iPad

M4 on an ipad is like a ferrari engine on a prius
  • I love how videos from this channel have the same production value of all LTT videos, but it has its own aura. The offscreen narration is awesomely sharp, the script is well written and entertaining without having to rely on questionable puns, and everything looks colorful and matte for some reason, and my eye balls love it. I just wish it had more content though. Thanks guys!
  • Oh lord, you're talking about me. I'm a 2018 iPad owner who has been recently thinking of upgrading to this M4 iPad. That's insane, right? I only use this thing to surf Amazon or watch YouTube when I'm travelling, which is one or two weeks out of the year. There's no justification for this, right? The 2018 iPad is sitting right next to me, sleeping. I woke it up earlier this week to update the OS, it still runs fine, no major decrease in battery life. If iPadOS 16 is going to be the last OS to support it... maybe next year.
  • In my years using tablet, I find that using YouTube from browser, gives me the best experience. It plays on the background, it can use PiP, it can play while screen is locked.
  • I have seen four major use cases for iPads in general: Kids College students for notes Artists for drawing Musicians for sheet music None of these use cases require a keyboard, and most only the Pencil.

M4 iPad Pro owner here I work in the music and theatre industry needing a highly mobile device for touring. Upgrading from a 2016 MacBook Pro, I've found the weight difference so much better, making it easy to carry in my backpack or Pelican case without a second thought. However, there are a few drawbacks. Some apps don't support true full screen on an external monitor, and the file system is still completely homeless, though I mainly use SharePoint. I also wish wireless mouse connectivity was better, with an actual cursor. On the positive side, I was pleasantly surprised by the seamless USB connection with my OfficeJet 250 printer. The new Magic Keyboard feels very premium, the OLED upgrade is outstanding, and the speakers are impressive. Built-in 5G has been a lifesaver in venues and hotels with trash networks. The ability to scan and sign documents with the Apple Pencil is also elite. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase and look forward to seeing how it improves over time.

Apple didn’t raise the base ram, they raised the price $200 and removed base model.
  • I really wanted to upgrade to this Ipad for this display alone but the compression from sidecar has killed that possibility for me. I just bought a viewsonic 15" portalble OLED monitor and it's GORGEOUS and only $499. Plugs in with one cable and allows me to dial in my noise removal and grain that I add to my videos and short films. Not nearly as bright as my Ipad but COMEON Apple! If I'm using a thunderbolt 4 cable to plug directly in there is NO REASON to be compressing my image like that!
  • Apple are experts at handicapping their devices for no reason

I have an M1 iPad Pro and every update makes me really want to just get a Macbook Air. Except only if they can give a full range hinge and a touch screen, I'd be willing to bump the price up $200 for those features, or give up on some performance if needed. There are just so many apps my iPad cant do cause they dont exist on the store, but the form factor for the hardware is second to none since M silicon. Its a shame the products just 9/10s when they are so close to being perfect. My recommendation is to skip the Pro line and go with a $300 iPad, its an insane value and I still have one from 7 years ago that is the same in every way, just not as good in every way.

I think Apple should make an iPadProOS where it takes all the features you’re missing from macOS and brings them to iPadOS and still keeps the core iPadOS experience.
  • @BarryTGash
I bought one as my first apple device. Primarily it is used to view and preliminarily edit photos I take out in the field. For studio shots I use it to control the camera - with the correct cable connecting them the lag is virtually non-existent and the huge screen is a boon for live view. Haven't tried it with any astrophotography yet. My main gripe is pared down software meaning, 9 times out of 10, I still prefer to edit on my desktop when I'm back home. But the plus side is it should last plenty of time for things like Lightroom to get updated to a better state. As for photoshop it misses several handy filters but most can be manually recreated, like the high pass filter. That said, where it really shines is editing at a higher dynamic range (shooting at 14bit gives up to 4 extra stops). My overall take is that if you've already got an ipad ignore it. Otherwise, and if the reasons Jonathan mentioned include you, go right ahead. Hopefully it holds its value well.

I mean, you kinda nailed it in the first section...this display is probably as good as displays that cost over 10,000. Think of it as a smart TV/monitor. I currently use m2 ipad Pro + MacBook Pro 16" and its basically perfect. I can have a multi monitor setup. I can take the ipad to watch things on the couch. I can plug my laptop into a tv, and then control it using the ipad. Its so flexible, and its the obvious intended use case, to be a supplemental device. I think that everyone who is waiting for the ipad to replace a laptop is going to be waiting a long time...if you just use it as intended as a complement to your existing setup, it is basically perfect. That isn't to say you can't take some meetings on it, or edit some documents, its very useful, but its just not meant to replace a macbook pro. There might be some overlap with the macbook air, where if you are just checking emails, joining zoom calls, and editing documents, this might be enough. I have found that naturally i gravitate to the iPhone for some tasks, the iPad for others, the Apple TV for others, and the MacBook Pro for others. Each has its own niche, and depending on the size of screen i want, the user interface, and the location, each one perfectly nails its niche.

I agree it’s more an accessory than anything standalone for productivity. However the M1 12.9” is 1/3 of the price of this new one, you can literally buy 3 and give 2, to family and you still have an incredible iPad. Because of the M1 chip it will be supported for many years to come, probably as long as the M4.
  • @blazewon22
I’m glad you addressed the fact that the M4 chip is partially designed to handle the upcoming AI needs on the iPad. You didn’t really think about how much more efficient the M4 is at power consumption and heat. The fact that the latest iPad Pro runs dual OLED and performs smoothly for GPU intensive games in such a thin shape is a feat of engineering that gets ignored. The shelf life for this M4 will be at least 5 years so I look at it as a significant lifecycle refresh vs someone who had an AX series chip. Also yes most people will not look to edit video on this device, but rather basic tasks such as media consumption, email / messaging, and browsing with light note taking. As a business traveler I love the lightweight of the 13” iPP. I love the new camera placement and the function row. I could’ve bought a MBA but I love taking notes and jotting down thoughts on a plane. I also like eReading. I hope that app developers like Google will embrace iPadOS and fix the bugs in their apps like YT and Google Docs. However I can get 95% of my work done on the device without all of the bulk.

OMG NEW MAC ADDRESS VIDEO FINALLY I LOVE YOU JONATHAN APPLE

I bought the dbrand iPhone leather skin and the adhesive sucks. It constantly peels up when I take it in and out of my pocket. Dbrand has been curiously silent on making it right.
