Acute Pancreatitis – Causes, Signs and Symptoms, Diagnosis & Treatment

Published 2024-07-26
What is acute pancreatitis? Acute pancreatitis is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that occurs when the pancreas becomes suddenly inflamed. The pancreas is a long, flat gland located deep in your abdomen, behind your stomach. It plays a crucial role in digestion by producing enzymes that help break down food. It also produces hormones like insulin that regulate blood sugar levels. When acute pancreatitis strikes, the pancreas becomes inflamed and swollen. This inflammation can happen quickly, often over a matter of hours or days. When this inflammation happens, the digestive enzymes that the pancreas normally releases into the small intestine to aid digestion start to attack and digest the pancreas itself. This self-digestion can cause severe pain and lead to serious complications if not treated promptly. Acute pancreatitis is more common than you might think. In the United States, it's responsible for about 275,000 hospital admissions each year. Worldwide, the incidence varies, but it's generally increasing in many countries.
