  • Great video of the inner working of a payphone! Thanks Rick. Keep them coming will watch them all!:washhands: My latest Mopar engine build at work is a 572 cubic inch wedge, using a Bill Mitchell all Aluminum block with a Monar 4.500 stroke crank with 4.500 piston bore!

Oh cool. I have never worked on a pay phone. I took apart an old princess table top phone from the 70s, even though I had np idea what I was doing at the time, but I saw a broken wire, soldered it in and wrapped with electrical tape (my father taught me how in grade school) and the phone started working again. Many years later I because an electronic technician and worked on lots of old phones with fax machines, but I specialized in RF devices.

I never even see any when I am out anymore... most kids I talk to don't know what they are.

That was interesting, I miss those old phones. When I was a kid we checked them and sometimes found dimes and nickels to buy candy with. It's great you keep it going for neighbors, friends and the young. I imagined some kid grown up and telling his kids about the payphone he used in Rick's yard. I'm curious, does it connect to cell phones also, or only landline phones?

Looking forward to the progress video on the phone.
  • @Lamz..
Nice little project. Did they always have to be taken apart just to recharge the batteriy? That must have been pretty time and resource consuming maintenance.

In the late 80s, it was possible to hack certain types of payphones by connecting a paperclip into the mouthpiece and touch the inside of the keyhole, this would result in a dial tone with no coins deposited, and a call could be made.
