One of the main characters and emotional cruxes of the show, Rei is a lonely, introspective character that's not only iconic for her personality and design, but also struck a chord with me because of how she went from an emotionless doll into someone who could understand and feel for others. Though understated, her theme is one of my favorite Evangelion motifs ever, not only portraying how strange and dissonant she is but also evoking sadness and empathy alongside it. However, it eventually crescendos into a loud and bombastic statement of her theme showing her growth and success across the series.

When the vocals started I began questioning if I'm going crazy and just hearing voices. And then they start singing "am I real or just a dream"? please don't 😂
  • Man you are doing god's own work making these suites. And you are right with what you said about her character. Be it nature with her having Lilith's soul or nurture with how she was raised as a defender of humanity (and its doom, ironic), she's the most selfless character in the series. As someone else said, it is rare to have this traight as both a character's greatest virtue and greatest flaw. And also, she is by far the strongest of the pilots mentally and spiritually. She quite well understands... how do I say it... her identity if not herself, to put it simply. That is seen in her dialogue in "Throne of Souls". And remember how generally mind-fucky angels are the strongest? Well, Shinji fought Leliel, failed miserably, got his mind turned inside out and would've been dead without a help of his mother. Asuka and Arael? That's just nsfw to talk about. But when Armisael confronted Rei with both intense physical pain and psychological assault? Her reaction was basically "FUCK YOU, you can try and break me all you want but you aren't hurting people I care about. I can be replaced. You can't". BOOM. Talk about strength of character. Rei III is used so few times I can't even remember to when and where, but it's so awesome. Yeah sorry for ranting your work is awesome keep it up bye!-
  • Am I real or just a dream? Am I something that you need or just an image of me? I love the words go perfectly with the concept of Rei. Anno's final warning not to get too attached to fantasy.

theres no words to describe Rei or her themes, she represents the born death and love and how we have to love during our life because we need it until we all die, i felt really bad when Rei II died but when i rewatched the show over and over i started feeling weird i had a lot of emotions mixed and her themes didnt help but overall i can just say its a deep odd when we question ourselves to keep our heads out of love and friendships is it even helpful? all you do just to die and let the others behind, but after the questioning i finally understood, love its a reason to live but also a reason to die, sounds worthless but its necessary, this may talk about the infinite bucle we are trapped on, born live lie love and death then repeat, once everythings done we care about our life but not how it started, how it finished. Its a personal reflection that each time i think of it i just can get out of the bucle, thats maybe why im horrofied by this show, i am meant to be an inteligent person but i fear things that i dont know, i fear death and i fear the tomorrow and the days that are coming, to be honest i havent rewatched evangelion again since im 15, i just cant the op of the show already is able to give me chills and i still remember that i had nightmares about Rei and evangelion once i finished EoE when i was 14. The summary is i have no words and im not the only one 17 comments and 48k views talk a lot about what im saying or maybe not
