In August 2021, I released a special video about my dog, This!, titled “Normalizing Imperfection in Dog Training”, covering our challenges so that everyone with a dog knows that struggling at some point in life together is completely normal. In that video, I encouraged everyone to take daily action to make tomorrow better than today for you and your dog. It doesn’t mean blocking out big chunks of time. Dog training with “Daily Quickies” is how I get so much accomplished without having long dog training sessions, and in this episode, I’m covering how easy it can be so that you can put it into action.

  • I do daily quickies multiple times a day. Several in the morning using breakfast as a reward, followed by crate training (it’s a slow process but better each day) the game is “spoon in your crate!” The spoon has some soft food on it and I give it to him once he’s settled in crate with door closed. I’m increasing the time each day. Now he runs in on his own and soon I’ll add a kong for longer duration. Outside I play search and tug and retrieve games. In the day it’s loose leash walking and night a variety of tricks and games. I adopted Mylo in June. He was so wild and reactive and unpredictable, I was truly concerned this would be his and my life. Until I found your channel!!! 😊 thank you!
  • @SD-my9so
I use the quickies. I call it doodling. It makes such a difference.
  • I didn't realize that I was doing this, but I've been doing this all along!! Anytime I want to give my dogs a treat, we do something. We play all sorts of the games. I need to be more intentional and work on more husband activity training.
  • Thanks Susan, making training accessible and easy for all. Our family enjoy playing, 'find the toy or food', my dog is so brilliant at this now, my children can hide his frisbee, upstairs, under the duvet, in one of the bedrooms and he still finds it in minutes or outside under something. He is amazing, 😀 tail showing his approval! We challenge him sometimes by asking for another cue before sending him to find his toy/food.
  • I call this "kettle training", for as long as the kettle is boiling for my coffee, I'm doing training on the kitchen floor :D
  • I feel so silly-- it's completely obvious to work on the tiny part of just exiting the front door.... I've been trying to get loose lead walking on the sidewalk in front of my house. And just.... ignoring? the pulling to get out there 😅 I lumped on accident! Thanks for the great advice yet again!! I can definitely split more to get better, faster results!
  • @ammi_10
YES! As a former dog groomer, a dog well conditioned to grooming has a much more enjoyable experience than the dog that's dragged to the groomer only when their coat is a mess. 🙄
  • Thanks, Susan & Say Yes Team! Before being released to her breakfast, Nellie does hand targets. Min gets a round of collar grab when I wake up in the morning.
  • Can I come live with you for about a year, of course I’ll bring my un trained dog😂👏🙌🏻🙏 I need training so bad.😳these are the very best videos! Thank you❤️👏🌟🦴
  • @CodexPotter
My pup can't really handle more than ten mins of training at a time so most of our training is this kind of quick format. I was naturally doing one review session where we review everything she knows, one handling session, one new/current thing session. Sometimes i mix it up and do new stuff with review stuff too. I'm adding a confidence building session in now too thanks to this video. We do 40 mins per day on the low end already, much more if you count the sit and wait during play sessions and I'm hoping to grow how long she can focus but she's still pretty young and it's more important to keep her engaged and getting consistent wins. She's really growing into a great dog and a lot of your videos have definitely helped.
  • @LJnBodhi
Yes! Love this SO much!❤ We've been doing this since we joined Recallers and it has made All the difference. Not only does it build our connection and make training sessions easier but it gives us a win every single day👍🏻
  • @charly5747
Hi Susan and Team. Thanks so much for this wonderful potcast.
  • Oh yeah! Every single doorway we come to - sit. Flying the door open - not the cue to go through the doorway. Release word then they can go out or come back in. You can see the wheels turning. Because it's done every single day multiple times a day, don't even have to ask for it. And no treat needed as going through the doorway is a self rewarding behavior. They're not going out or coming back in to eat or whatever else , unless they're sitting. After they get back in the door, I get a pretty (sit pretty - that gets a treat for the trick), release word to check out their snuffle mats or hidden treats (Nose Work) at least twice a day. Did you find them all? I work from home so every single day, first break, stay there mommy has to get a shower. Still in their respective spots once i get back from break. This helps people with the 3 minutes of supervised isolation for the CGC test too. Let's face it, it's at least a 10 minute shower, right! Every single flight of stairs - either sit wait at top until you get down first or i prefer to send my guys up or down, but I'm letting them know to go first. If my students would just do one session of perch work, pivots, and spins per day, that's how many reinforcements per week for being in reinforcement zone? Oh this is where the good stuff happens, right by your side! Of course it grows from there, but at first it's loose leash walking for the majority of students. Think it's time to do one per dog after work BEFORE our walk. One walk per dog - gets them some one on one time with me, plus gives them a break from each other. Want to incorporate something for my Rodeo Dog to get her to focus on crossing the finish line without looking at me. TY Susan for the inspiration to keep going.
  • I’d like to add I started yard agility as well and when the weather is good again I intend on making it a daily game as long as he enjoys it !!
  • Thanks Susan. This podcast is very helpful, especially the quickies. I have rehomed a high energy 15 month old Labrador - Phoenix, who has had no training from his previous owner. I have been overwhelmed by the training needed for him .....its like......There is so much to do, What is the most important training to do first? Now I can see that I can train 2 or 3 things as Quickies. He comes to work with me, so I can do quickies in my coffee and lunch break, which also gives a different environment. I am enrolled on both Recallers and Home School the Dog. Already I am seeing moments of calmness. That is causing me another problem, cuz when he is calm, I wonder if he is ill !!!
  • @azogal53
Anytime I want to give a treat or engage my dog, I do this. This podcast will help me be a little more intentional about it. Thanks! 🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪
  • Totally makes sense! This house is all about Quick training sessions all day! Just did one with Toggle while watching a podcast! Can you choose to chill, while I stand at the counter....he chose "Frog"...paid it, made out for a much calmer 10 minutes with the Chihuahua mix! This is a reminder for me to pick more specific behaviors needed by each dog that can be worked in a short amount of time that will add up in the long run!
