How to Remove a Fuel Pump Lock Ring: Reality Check!

Published 2021-05-05
In this video I explained the reality for removing a lock ring. They can be easy or they can be a pain to remove. There is multiple methods to remove them and none are perfect! You will damage the ring if its seized in place.

If it doesn't start turning from the start, with the lock ring tool or a wood plank/metal bar, you will need to apply more force and it will damage the tabs of the ring.

Be sure to use penetrating oil as soon as you remove the seat and the plugs from the fuel pump. This will give you an edge agains't the ring's friction.

Hope it help!

If you go to an auto parts store and tell them that you want to borrow a tool to remove the ring holding the fuel pump/ fuel sending unit and tell them the year make and model of the vehicle they will let you borrow it. Sometimes you just leave your id with them and other times you give them a deposit and your id and as long as you return the tool undamaged you will get the whole deposit back
  • I used the exact same method to get mine off, except I used a large rubber mallet instead of a metal one. I beat on it for about ten minutes and it broke free. I didn't even damage the tabs at all! it did fight me most of the way, not an easy task. The short prybar was just the right tool, I've had mine for at least 30 years and it's a must have for my tool box. Thanks for this video, it helped make my job easier!

I didn’t use this video on the car you’re talking about, but used the same/similar method on a golf cart fuel pump, worked like a charm.

This video needs to be 3 minutes max. I swear you took more of my life just watching this entire video

I tried for hours to get mine off until I used your chisel bar thing and it finally came off. Thank you a ton this saved me!!

Good sir, your video has ended a 12 hour battle for my father against that bloody ring. Worked within a couple of minutes! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

Thank you for your video. I had one of those nail pullers and it worked like a charm. I had been trying to unscrew the lock ring for an hour with no luck.

Your awesome bro! Thank you for the video, I’m about to do this and didn’t want to have to borrow the tool. Subbed
  • Can confirm, throw the universal in the heap, broke tabs instantly. Used my seal puller as a bar like you did. Thank you for the video. I'm a diesel tech so I don't have annnnything for a lock ring like that. Much appreciated 🙏

Thanks a lot man, the bar worked like a charm(got one from Lowe’s for $8)I tried the spanner wrench and many other tools but I finally got it loose with the bar. Keep up the great work!!👍
  • Well, I tried a lot of other things, but this what ended up working. Thanks so much!

You saved my bacon with this video - thank you for posting! I didn’t have the exact same crow bar but one similar - it’s the angle on the end to get a straight hit I think is key. After an hour of cussing went to the tube and landed on your vid. Worked great for me!
  • @Pausitz
Was about to give up. Used an angle grinder to make convert a crow bar into the suggested tool and it worked! Thank you.

    Very Clever! Great advice!!!!
  • Thanks for video. To install the lock ring I resorted to a drilling/crack hammer 3 lb sledge and a flat head screw driver.

I remember when I did this a few years before your video. Oh man that sucked. I used a large screwdriver with a wide and thick end and hit that with a hammer. Took many attempts with other methods first.

I tried every way you described on my 2010 Corolla, (and many others) but no success. Even a tool that grab on to many sides of the ring would not work when I used a 30' breaker bar. Then I tried an impact wrench with the same tool and it came loose immediately!
  • Bless you sir the pry bar worked, 1 alternator 300 dollars 1 fuel pump 500 dollars verdict . . . It ain't got no gas in it

I’m battling one right now on a 03 crv , good times 👍🏻🍻🇨🇦
