Blepharitis – Causes, Signs and Symptoms, Home Remedies & Treatment

Published 2024-08-02
What is blepharitis? Blepharitis is a common eye condition characterized by an inflammation of the eyelids. This inflammation typically occurs at the base of the eyelashes, where tiny oil glands are located. These oil glands, also called meibomian glands, play a crucial role in eye health. They produce an oily substance that helps keep our tears from evaporating too quickly. When these glands become clogged or irritated, it can lead to blepharitis. There are two main types of blepharitis: anterior and posterior. Anterior blepharitis affects the front edge of the eyelid, where the eyelashes are attached. Posterior blepharitis, also known as meibomian gland dysfunction, affects the inner edge of the eyelid that touches the eyeball.
