Thyroid Patients: Go Gluten Free Right Now

Should you go gluten free if you have a thyroid problem? My answer is probably and, in this video, I lay out 5 reasons as to why I think most thyroid patients should consider it.

Going gluten free is almost always a good idea if you have Hashimoto's thyroiditis or Graves' disease because these are autoimmune diseases.

And we know from many clinical studies as well as patient reports that thyroid patients with these conditions often benefit tremendously from going gluten free.

But what about other thyroid patients? What about thyroid patients who have hypothyroidism but not from Hashimoto's? Should these patients still go gluten free?

My answer is yes for these 5 reasons:

#1. 70 to 90% of patients with hypothyroidism do indeed have Hashimto's thyroiditis.

#2. Going gluten free limits your diet and may help you keep your dietary goals.

#3. There's nothing to lose by going gluten free for 90 days.

#4. Many thyroid patients report feeling better on a gluten free diet.

#5. Going gluten free usually helps reduce carb intake which may help with weight loss and insulin resistance.

It's definitely not the case that everyone with a thyroid problem MUST be gluten free but I've found that many patients with thyroid problems could benefit from this type of diet and they aren't taking advantage of it.

    Dr Childs, I’ve been watching your videos and learning from you for the past several months. My doctor began treating my thyroid in early September and, at the same time, I cut out gluten, dairy, refined sugar and increased lean proteins. In less than 2 months, my free T3 has increased from 2.0 to 2.4 and my RT3 decreased from 22.4 to 7.5. I’m no longer bedridden from weakness and fatigue and lost a good 7 pounds. Thyroid med, dietary changes, and appropriate supplements. Thank you!

  • I have Graves’ disease. My lab numbers were terrible for years. I finally decided to go gluten-free 100% and my Graves’ disease went into remission within 60 days. I have been in remission since last fall and I have never taken thyroid medication. I had some skin issues on the top of my feet that I had for years. They too cleared right up.
  • I have Hashimoto's Hypothuroid or had. I really do feel so much better after going gluten free. I've also tried cutting out chemical soaps, detergents, and perfumes. I am so amazed at the fact that I had a blood test recently, and my levels are normal.
  • I am gluten and soy free since my thyroid removal 1 year ago. I am feeling fantastic. I am doing better now that I am strict on no gluten or soy and minimal dairy that is good quality. I feel SOOOO much better.

    I would like to point out that there is a big difference between just going gluten free and eating Celiac safe gluten free food. Some research has shown a connection between Celiac and thyroid disease so before anyone just tries the gluten free diet because of thyroid disease, they might want to be checked for Celiac so they understand whether or not they can just eat gluten free food or if they will have to eat a Celiac safe gluten free diet.

    Gluten is definitely a big problem for my Thyroid and energy status. I would often fall asleep for hours after just eating a couple of white bread buns. Now I'm not Gluten free right now but I swear Glutamine helps me out a lot. I also take high dosed Probiotics (with bifidos), ground milk thistle seeds for fibre and fermented foods like Kefir. Lowering the dosage of Gluten / Dairy foods and including more variety has been a benefit.

    I have been 1 week gluten free, I have found an unexpected improvement in vision which means thatI hardly have to wear glasses when I used to have to wear them all the time, huge benefit from going gluten free. My clear vision has lifted my mood, health changes have helped me work faster, duet changes and strength training has reduced my weight by 2 kilos. All good for me right now.

    I have celiac disease and I'm hypothyroid. They found the thyroid problem years ago first, a few years later the Celiac disease. By that time I was on deaths doorstep organ failure. I still ended up losing two organs 🙄, totally calcified. Thankfully my other organs recovered over the years.
  • I had an ungodly, sever skin rash n my legs for a year. THen digestive issues. Been GR for about a year now. Almost instantly, the rash started to get better. Then ALL joint pain was gone!! Next my tinnitus left.... Lost 20 lbs in two months.

    Thanks for the informative video. I have Hashimoto's that was actually originally discovered by accident when I herniated a disc in my neck and had an MRI that revealed thyroid nodules. Due to this, I had discovered it very early in the process (at which point my thyroid was still overactive in the early stages), I have since gone gluten-free and been in complete remission. I get ultrasounds and labs every 6 months, but I take no thyroid medications, and I feel completely normal in regards to my energy level. I consider myself proof that gluten-free is an exceptional choice for people with Hashimoto's who may be able to start the process early enough.

    I stopped eating wheat 2 months age when I learned that wheat is contaminated with glyphosate. To do that I also gave up eating all ultra-processed foods because they are all filled with wheat products. I recently got a checkup with a TSH test and my TSH went from 3.4 down to 0.43 I also feel a lot better with more energy and I'm losing about 2 pounds per week.
  • I whole heartedly agree about being gluten free with Hashimotos or any type of auto immune disease. My practitioner does food sensitivity testing annually and crazy how it changes. Seems whatever I take in the most, let’s say almond milk, almond flour and almonds in general- my test will show this as a moderate level food to avoid. When a diet is limited to no gluten, no grains, no dairy, little to no processed foods, mostly organic, no seed oils except high quality olive oil, moderate lectins, moderate oxalates - I tend to find something I like and eat it all the time. Unfortunately, my body doesn’t like this. 🤣 Auto immune disease can start from a leaky gut so anytime we can eliminate foods that our systems find irritating, I believe the faster we can heal our guts and microbiome, resulting in better overall nutrient uptake and health.
  • Dr. Childs, per your recommendations I've been 95% gluten free last 10 months. I've also removed dairy and caffeine out of my diet. I feel good. In 8 months my total TSH came down from 30 to 20 and T3 went up slightly to .78. My doctor told me to continue with whatever it is that I'm doing. When can I expect to have my numbers to become normal? Is there a chance for that? This has been one of my favorite videos you have. Thank you!
  • Dr Child’s I have hypothyroidism and I’m on T3 only and it does not work for me. I remain hypothyroid My neck is swelling ( which scares me) Endocrinologist said I’m 1 in 10 that have this problem and there is nothing they can do to help me. I’ve tried NDT, levothyroxine nothing works. Can you offer me any advice please?
  • I went gluten free for 3 months. Ate grilled fish, chicken, fruits, veggies. My Thyroid had a total melt down.
  • Hi doctor childs. I had half thyroid out, and my TSH went up, T4 went down. So got put in T4 levo, slow increase over one year to 100. Helps for 3 hours a day. But, still tired, only 5 hours sleep, but the blood test was normal except T3 was low. I have some symptoms of graves disease, especially in my eyes. They bulge a little, but still feel tired, lack of sleep. My weight fluctuates. I took 5mg of T3 and lowered T4 to 75, from 100. My eyes look worse, pressure is felt between my eyes. What am I doing wrong? How can I have hypothyroid and graves as well? I'm 58years old, my health started going down hill 8 years ago. But have been tired since I had my first child 38 years ago. I stopped dairy and gluten 3 years ago. Only have decaf. I avoid sugar, only have coconut and olive oil.
  • I’ve been going to different doctor for over 4 years now. I think I’m being test wrong or misdiagnosed. Anytime I have gluten my stomach blows up. My face randomly look swollen one day and slim the next. Now I hsve these ridge waves in my tongue and horizontal line in my nail. I feel like nobody is listening me. 😞
  • I wish you were my doctor was dignoise with thyroid cancer 2009 on leveroxin 50and 75 odd days a/f dignoise 4years ago put on bisoprol and adoxabam but blame a/f on leveroxin lots pains strange feeling in back now 4 weeks also pain the flank right side in Northern Ireland no other med only leveroxin
