these were so fun to see. don't think I ever saw anyone react in real time before. the prodigy was a huge influence, for sure. the writing style you were talking about, with new material in every section - I've always known it as being "through-composed"
  • This dude even remixed Zelda music in an officially licensed necrodancer+Zelda fusion game Cadence of Hyrule. He's a force for sure.
  • I do remember that if you're near the merchant for this stage he goes in big time singing with it.
  • @IllegallySam
Fun Fact: This song also doubles as the title theme if you don’t own the game’s DLC and plays while the game loads on bootup.

I believe the linearity serves a purpose. Because you need to finished each stage in a set time, (Literally the length of the song) you can tell how much time you still have from the song. If the song were to loop it's main segment you'd have to keep a count in your head. (There is no visual countdown) this way you can get distracted by complex gameplay, and don't need to keep a constant track and still now how much time is left.
  • I love how the fanbase immediately pushes an entire OST your way the moment you show a hint of interest. Can't blame them crypt of the necrodancer is all bops. Hopefully in the future you can hear some of the Legend of Zelda crossover Cadence in Hyrule. Funky remixes of old favorites and unique boss fight tracks I'd love to hear your opinion on.

Wait until you get into the boss themes! Each boss is representative of a different genre, and they all rock.
  • This is one of my favourite tracks from the game. Spooky dance music. Love it.

Each music track is exactly as long as each level is, and you move and do actions "synced" to the rhythm. Once the song ends the level ends at the same time. So yeah they don't loop. They are exactly as long as they have to be for each level lol. The overall quality is literally the same, amazing and constant, throughout the whole ost.

This is one of those rare games that I've never played but I have the ost on my phone lmao, nothing but jams and cool vibes. Got me through my work shift a few times in the past when my body just refused to sleep, might have to put in on shuffle later xD

It's pretty neat how you've been hearing the soundtrack so far in the exact order you would in a run of the game. There are 5 zones in this game, divided into 3 levels. So you've now heard all 3 levels of Zone 1. I'm not sure how I'd pin down what the theme of zone 1 is supposed to be, other than simply being an introduction to the musical style that's all throughout the game. But the rest of the zones all have their own unique vibe to them for sure. Zone 2 is a mushroom swamp with weird alien sounding synths, and a surprisingly mellow level 3 track ("Portabellohead (2-3)" is my personal favorite from the whole ost). Zone 3 is ice and fire themed, dynamically switching between an ethereal synthy sound on the ice parts, or a heavy metal rendition of the same song on the fire parts, as you move between the two halves of the levels. (I'd definitely suggest listening to both versions in the same video if you've gotten any submittions that happen to be a zone 3 theme) Zone 4 was originally the final zone, the titular crypt of the Necrodancer himself, with a sort of more dark/serious tone compared to the earlier zones. Zone 5 was added as DLC, and is electricity themed, kinda hard to describe, but some sort of mix of zone 1 and 2's style I guess. (I saw someone submitted the 5-3 theme "Six Feet Thunder", and you're in for a ride with that one) Something you probably wouldn't notice unless you played or saw the levels in order though is that each of the 3 levels are in gradually higher tempos. As a rhythm game, this obviously makes the game gradually harder as you progress. Every time you get to the 3rd level of a zone there's something imposing about the noticable jump in BPM coupled with how they all seem to start out eerily calm (notice how there's very little happening in this song for the first 10 seconds). Of course the tempo drops back down a bit as you get to the next zone (so 2-1 isn't as fast as 1-3, but still slightly faster than 1-1, if that makes sense) You asked if the soundtrack ever slows down, and I guess the closest would be boss theme "Knight to C-Sharp (Deep Blues)" or the aforementioned "Portabellohead (2-3)" but I suppose not really in the sense you probably meant. Though on the topic of the boss music in this game, it's some of the only tracks on here that actually loop. It's really funny that you've only gotten to hear his non-looping tracks, as Danny B is an absolute god at making the most out of a short looping track. I myself submitted the song "Betus Blues" from Super Meat Boy, and that track goes on a whole journey it feels like in just under 2 minutes. "Knight to C-Sharp" does something similar in about 40 seconds, complete with a 9 second long "climax" part. As someone who's been a fan of Danny B for many years, I think you're spot on about how his style of composition works. It just kinda goes from part to part like a musical stream of consciousness, or that's how it seems sometimes anyway. I honestly can't pinpoint any exact leitmotifs in any of the Necrodancer soundtrack. I'm sure they're there, but I'd have to sit down and analyze to hear it. But still, back when the game went out of beta to full release and Zone 4 was added, I still just "felt" that 4-3 sounded like Necrodancer specifically, and not just "Danny Baranowsky".

Such a funky beat, probably one of my favorite level theme, the high pitched synth at the start makes me think of a glittering cavern. This song just makes you bump your head without realizing, I like how it's groovy but has intensity to it keeping you on your toes in game. Just a good time, I like this one quite a bit. I don't have much to say here but just because I don't write a small essay doesn't mean the song is lesser, it's just my thoughts while listening to the song.
  • @Mercsblog
There is a version with the shopkeeper and i still love that one :P
  • @Hadaron
If you really want to get overwhelmed by pure song, a YouTuber named Ani Mancer made a Megamix of every single version of this song. Danny B actually had a bunch of different composers do renditions of the soundtrack for the different characters, so it’s an amazing bombardment of: Danny Baranowski A-Rival Family Jules Jake Kaufman Chipzel Girlfriend Records Overclocked Records Yeah. It’s a lot, but it’s great.

God, this game has such a good OST. Crypt of the Necrodancer is a roguelite rhythm game where you can only move and attack on the beat. It’s a lot of fun, although I cannot for the life of me figure out the movement patterns of the goddamn bats
  • @wavedash101
The best stage theme. I wonder if you have any of the remixed tracks in your queue? There are multiple versions of the soundtrack that are all officially part of the game (usually associated with certain playable characters)
  • @Senfree
I actually hear a lot of Infected Mushroom in the sound of it.
