Just when I think there is nothing left to find in SMM, you always find these amazing ideas!

Threre is actualy anotger way to detect if mario gets a power up. If you stack a laucher on a muncher on tracks in a specific way, the launcher will fall off when the power up sound is played(and the game slows down a bit), and the laucher falling can trigger a p or a pow. The beauty of this setup is that it is loaded for the entire level, so it only takes around 12 sprites.
(It is possible to cheese it if you take the power up if the muncher is at the end of the rail, because then the launcher doesnt fall off. To fix this you replicate is twice with different muncher-on-track-timings which doubles the sprites from 6 to 12) -
