The Woman King, starring Viola Davis, Thuso Mbedu and Lashana Lynch, speaks to themes of Justice, Sisterhood, Identity and Slavery within the African context of 1800s. In this a group of all-female warriors protected the African kingdom of Dahomey with skills and fierceness unlike anything the world has ever seen. Faced with a new threat, Gen. Nanisca trains the next generation of recruits to fight against a foreign enemy that's determined to destroy their way of life.

Actor Spaces got invited to interview the cast at the Saxon Hotel. They were beautiful, excited and ready to have conversations about the film. Here is what they had to say…

Loved the fact that the accents were not too overdone in trying to be uniform and exact. For one thing the Kingdom has not existed for a while so what would be the frame of reference? Furthermore, the subtitles in the scenes where the King speaks to the Portugese trader implied we (the audience) were 'hearing' Dahomey people speak English however they are speaking their language. Almost as if we are watching an English dubbed film (where the actors are actually speaking Dahomey language)...making the whole thing about accents, a non issue for me!
  • Great seeing Masali Baduza..watched her in Noughts and Crosses on BBC Iplayer.UK

That's so disappointing that they wouldn't let them use their accents. Could had made the movie way more of just a beautiful poem to all black people. Just by showing that were all seen. Still Loved it ❤
