My condolences to all family members to those who lost their lives. God speed to all the work crews.

Very sorry to her about the loss of life. I hope that the bridge is reopened as soon as possible.

RIP to the man recovered. Having worked in construction, I can say with some level of certainty that replacing the bridge will cost $4-5 billion, not the low ball number around $1-2 billion.
  • Condolences to the families. So sorry for your loss. The Ship owner needs to pay . Why is the news not talking about this?

Try $6 BILLION. Thinks I’m wrong? Try building anything today. Building a 20’ wide 100’ long foot bridge 25’ over a 4 lane road. A foot bridge over dry land- $25 million

WHy is the bridge's insurance PAYING, the SHIP owner's insurance should be paying

the ramps on both sides are already there. I dont get it.

The bridge should not be rebuilt. Use the money to improve the northside beltway as a means to avoid the downtown tunnels.

The only actual solution I can see is to tunnel under the shipping channel, so that there is no bridge there in the first place that can be hit by ships or bombed. Like the bridge-tunnels in the Norfolk, VA, USA area. My solution would be a tunnel as on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel and the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel and I-664 Bridge-Tunnel. No bridge over the shipping channel. The I-695 approach tunnel portal causeways are already in place, for the original design. MDTA planned a 6,200 foot long tunnel but advertised for bids and found that the bridge could be built for half the cost. Recent major bridges are being built with a 70 to 100 year design life. There are other late Interstate System era bridges with about 180 feet of clearance that maritime interests want to see replaced with 215 feet or more. Therefore it would be myopic to replace the Key Bridge with the same profile which provided 185 feet of vertical clearance. Granted the Bay Bridge's max clearance of 186 feet will rule what can get to Baltimore harbor, but if we are designing for 70 to 100 years in the future, we can count on the Bay Bridge being replaced long before then. So a new Key Bridge with 220 feet of max vertical clearance would be 0.5 to 0.7 mile longer than the current 1.6 miles. It would be wise to use a shallower grade than the about 4% existing, like about 2.5%. It may actually be less expensive to build the 6,200 foot long tunnel that was originally planned. I want to see an engineer's estimate.

Not a dollar of our tax money should go to rebuilding this bridge.. Not even Federal money.. The shipping company should be held accountable 100% for the cost.
  • @augggie
I wonder what it would cost building the bridge non-union

I don't think it's fair that just the People who is in charge gets to decide how and what Model the New Frances Scott Key Bridge will be I think the Whole State of Maryland & the People who it really affected should really take a Vote in What Kind an Model the Bridge should be because I seen the Beautiful Pictures Posted this Bridge just wasn't a any Kind of Bridge it was a Beautiful Place that held a Lot of good Memories & Views & I am sure it was Tresure & was Cherished by Millions of People , Me Personally I wish I could have been able to have Memories there but it wasn't till it Collapsed that I even heard or seen such a Beautiful Piece of Art & it affected me it made me feel like I lost a loved one all over again & I Personally feel like a Suspension Bridge would be Best like the one in Brooklyn New York but just my thoughts . Love from Ohio thinking of the Baltimore Folks & Many Blessings.
