Tricksters | The Cunning and Untrustworthy

Published 2023-06-21
In mythology and folklore, most often the forces of good and evil are clearly defined. However, there is always at least one being who does not fit either category: the trickster. They come in all shapes and sizes, genders, species etcetera, crossing established boundaries of law and order, sometimes doing bad things for good rather than malice, or using sneaky manipulation to prey on others, or pranking the unsuspecting, or using cunning to accomplish their goals. This program will discuss some of the characteristics and types of tricksters found in mythology and legend. From the Norse god Loki, to the Native American spirit Coyote, to the Greek Eris, and the Chinese Sun Wukong!

  • Another trickster is the raven that stole the sun. Imo that is insanely impressive if not terrifying.
  • @BinroWasRight
I love them all but Raven from Pacific Northwest Native mythology is my favorite. He's a boundary crosser, a chaotic force that shakes up the status quo but also false assumptions and injustice. He saves the sun, moon and stars because it's what needs to be done and he is the vehicle of that necessity. Sometimes he seems ineffably deep and wise, sometimes silly and mischievous. But to be a Trickster is to be comfortable with paradox and with knowing that everything is in flux. A Trickster's perspective is often of one who is outside the system and sees its with true clarity, holding up a mirror, as you said, to us. That is a beautiful concept.
  • Since the Mask was a product of Loki, that makes him the ultimate trickster !
  • I would say Loki is my favorite. A facet of tricksters is a tendency to 'get around', or tease others who struggle with such. Tricksters tend to reap what they sow in that many of the challenges they face are the results of them somehow creating the problem or taking on the thing willingly. They also can fall into the Byronic hero and general antihero tropes/archetypes.

  • I really like this video because tricksters are fascinating! I guess my favorites are Coyote, Raven and Anansi. I'd love to see individual videos for different tricksters!
  • Me watching the video: "Where's THE trickster I know..." Narration, near the end of the video: "Perhaps the most famous trickster of mythology is Loki-" Me: "THERE'S the nod to my favorite pantheon to learn about." All in all a FABULOUS video! And yes, please! More videos on tricksters like Loki and Coyote! Thank you for the time and effor you put into these videos you do!

I find it most interesting that each culture has its own trickster. You exposed the subject beautifully, as always. I keep loving your work, you always go into the intricacies and details of symbolic meanings which is so helpful.
