Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi (Genesis) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

Published 2018-02-08
A playthrough of Sega's 1990 action game for the Sega Genesis, Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi.

Played through on the default settings.

Shadow Dancer is one of my favorites games on the Sega Genesis. I've always preferred it a bit over the Shinobi Genesis games. I like them all, but I thought this one always felt a bit special. Even back in the 90s, it was mix of old-fashioned game play with a super modern and cool coat of paint. There wasn't too much to complicate matters - you have a magic attack and you can sic your dog on people, but otherwise it was fairly similar to Shinobi. It makes sense since Shadow Dancer is the only official sequel to the original Shinobi game, but Shadow Dancer is so much more polished.

Actually, I think that Shadow Dancer is probably my second favorite Shinobi. Shinobi Legions is my definitely my favorite, but this isn't far behind it!

The graphics look great, especially for a game from 1990, and I'd take the Genesis version's new soundtrack over the arcade one any day. The Genesis port feels very much like the arcade Shadow Dancer, even though the games were fairly different from one another. I really did appreciate how this one doesn't hold back on the difficulty level. Just like any other Sega platformer, Shadow Dancer is quite difficult. I found it harder than Revenge of Shinobi and Shinobi III for sure, but I liked the Rolling Thunder-style level layouts and the art style much more in this one. The soundtrack is probably also my favorite of the series.

If you have a Genesis and don't have this game, I'd really recommend it. You can get the cart for $10-15 on eBay, and if you have any interest in the game, it would be money well spent.

  • Shadow Dancer was a pretty fantastic early title for the Genesis - it looked and sounded amazing in 1990, and it still plays just as well as it did 28 years ago. It's well worth snagging a copy if you have a Genesis!

I was like 7 when this came out. When the opening theme and main theme music played, I almost couldn't contain the nostalgia. I miss that part of being a kid.

my god, I love this game dearly, has a special place in my heart, I remember late nights playing this game, even though it gave me anxiety for being a one shot dead and the hectic soundtrack which I love. what an amazing game lost the sands of time. so many memories
  • Many people do not know that the dog is a ninja weapon. The dogs and the ninjas like to keep it that way.

I loved Revenge of Shinobi....and then I got Shadow Dancer and just lost my young mind. This and Strider were my jams on the Genesis.

14:04 Ninjas: wait there's NO GROOOOOOOOOOOUUUND!! Yellow: brothers!wait for-dead I remember those ninjas..someone really hates them..
  • Being the younger child, my older brother always got first dibs on stuff. He got "The Revenge of Shinobi" and I got this game, which was considered a hand-me-down... ...and I'm not even mad! Shadow Dancer became my personal favorite game on the Genesis! The soundtrack alone is criminally underrated (Stage 2-1's theme, especially). I'd recommend playing this game on the "no ninja-stars" mode. It really changes how you have to approach your enemies and adds a fun challenge.

This was my shit as a kid. I remember reaching the final boss, but I don't remember if I ever flipped it over.

Holy cow this game looks incredible. I don't remember it being available at the local rental store. That's too bad, because I know my friend and I would've loved this game, maybe even have bought it had we known about it.

Pretty scary this game's title and credits screens showed the Twin Towers... I know, it was 1990, 11 years before the disaster.
