In Part 1of this video series, I talk about having two bicycles stolen, plus some unusual theft experiences in Guatemala and Peru.

In this video, Part 2, I open with the story of the most extreme incident from my trip to Peru - something that happened to me at the airport in Lima.

My stories then move to Hong Kong, where, apparently, I didn't learn my lesson from Guatemala. And I paid the price.

Then this video winds up with a series of events from one of the most extraordinary countries in the world: Ethiopia.

All these crazy things happened to me in Ethiopia, but I hope my stories don't deter anyone from going there. Any trip to Ethiopia could turn out to be the trip of a lifetime. It's an amazing country full of wonder and hospitality.

But, just like anywhere, there are thieves of various types on the prowl, and you have to keep your wits about you. Or, as I learned in one epic moment, you have to draw on your inner "rampage." 😁

I spent a week in Ethiopia in 2018. But just in Addis Ababa. Loved the city. There's this public market called Merkato that's really incredible. And their coffee is fantastic. I have plans to visit the Omo Valley in the future.

You are very brave. I would have suffered from anxiety and not travel to 3rd world countries. But look at you. Amazing.
  • You were young, stronger and full of adventure spirit so no thieves could stop you from discovering the world. I was entertained as I cooked and eat dinner.

Really interesting stories, thanks Doug. Brings back memories of my trip to China and being taken by officials in an attempt to extort money from me. Pretty terrifying for the inexperienced traveller. Loved the photos at the end. Video is great, but there is something extra special about photos - to be able to savour a split second of time for a lot longer and take in all the subtleties of a scene. Great photos. Looking forward to part 3.

Wonderful pictures of Ethiopia after your final credits. Goes a little way to balancing your horror stories of biking that country. Were you blogging at that time. Would love to read about those travels.

Hopefully your backpack/stuff in Malaysia is safe. On another note, thanks for the warnings on Ethiopia, I certainly have struck that country off from my travel list... :D

Your Hong Kong adventure reminded me of the movie Chungking Express from 1994 🥳
  • Hi Doug. I love hearing about your adventures. For someone who calls himself the Cycling Canadian you seem to have spent more time outside Canada than in it. Have you made any plans on when you are going to leave Thailand and where you going to go next?

Chunk King Mansions in the '90's? You should have seen them in 1976. I didn't stay there. I stayed up Nathen Road at the HK Hostel.
