So in the late 80's to early 90's, MF DOOM, was part of a rap group named KMD. Which consisted of him and his brother (there was a third guy but he dipped before they signed), unfortunately his brother died in a car crash just as they were about to get big. This was of course a huge hit to DOOM, but even worse was that nobody in the industry, at least not labels and such, dared to sign DOOM after that accident. He basically felt betrayed by the music industry and took a hiatus from music, until he started showing up at small venues freestyling in his mask. He chose this mask and the villain persona as a reference to Dr. Doom from The Fantastic Four, due to Dr. Doom having a similar backstory where he was on the expedition with the F4 that gave them powers. As far as I remember Dr. Doom felt he was betrayed by F4 and the company they worked at that time, which made him become a villain. So yeah, Metal Face was very intentional and has a tragic backstory to it, I urge you to study up on it, as I am writing this from memory and I could have gotten some things messed up.

MF stands for both Metal Fingers and Metal Face. He uses Metal fingers when he is producing songs as such on the special herbs pack. He uses Metal Face when he is Rapping on albums such as MM... Food or Madvillany.

"He wears a mask just to cover the raw flesh". Originally DOOM was in a hip hop group KMD with his brother in the 90s, but his brother died in a traffic accident and DOOM had many dark years in NYC being homeless. He arose from that as MF DOOM, wearing a mask to cover his face after going through so much trauma. I think another purpose was he thought hip hop was becoming too materialistic and so the mask represents how it doesn't matter what he looks like as long as the musics good.

20:40 - Forgot to mention on "Bistro" that DOOM also mentioned Madlib's aliases Yesterday's New Quintet & Quasimoto 57:22 - Wildchild was a co-member of Madlib's group from his early years Lootpack, Madlib did most of his rapping apart from Quasimodo in that group 1:09:59 - Madlib was producing this song as YNQ, which is mainly Madlib playing as 5 jazz artists that covered "How Can You Believe" by Stevie Wonder HAPPY BIRTHDAY RON🎉🎉🎉

You guys gotta do Black Star or Black On Both Sides pretty soon. Masterful and timeless hip-hop on those.
  • @umex5693
Amazing to see how father and son enjoy this album at the same time. this shit is timeless (If it's classic, it's gon' last forever then)
  • @BeatsyBoy
All the names DOOM mentions on Bistro are alter egos of him and Madlib (other than the two cats at the laundromat) Fancy Clown is brilliant because it’s featuring Viktor Vaughn, which is the alter ego of DOOM that’s his younger self, and Viktor is rhyming about his girl being with some “fancy clown” that wears a mask all day — himself as DOOM in the future.

DOOM being born in England was basically an accident his mother was visiting family there when she had him, because he was born in England he got automatic English citizenship and he never bothered to get US citizenship which would eventually come back to haunt him as he would eventually be denied entry to the USA and be forced to live in England, he is in reality from NYC he had absolutely no memory of his time in England so was completely influenced by growing up in NYC The MF DOOM persona comes from his experience as part of kmd and his love of comics, in the late 80's early 90's DOOM was a part of kmd with his brother sub rock and another guy, they had a fairly successful first album getting played on mtv and selling decent numbers, while making their second album sub rock was killed in an accident crossing a road shortly after their record lable dropped them feeling like their second album was too controversial this caused DOOM to have a major dislike of major labels combine that with a love for comic books and you get MF DOOM the supervillian here to destroy the rap game DOOM'S career started before wu tang formed i belive the earliest appearance of DOOM was in 1989 back then know as zev love x he was featured on the 3rd bass song the gas face, if you wanna see a super young maskless DOOM give the video for the song a watch it's on YouTube pretty good song too

Sun Ra is one of the greatest jazz pianist and a philosopher known for his unique style
  • @logicbk
MF Doom is Zev Love X from the group KMD. He was first featured on 3rd Bass' Gas Face back in 1989. So technically he was out as a rapper before Wu Tang.

A few things…. 1.) Happy belated birthday. 2.) instant sub. 😎 3.) I dig your pops insights. I’ve listened to this album hundreds of times always trying to find something new. But the point your pops made about not focusing too much on the lyrics but listen to the beats and the individual parts, wow 🤯 Good shit bruv.
  • @IceKoldKilla
I'm pretty sure DOOM was always his nickname. Comes from Dumile. Pronounced "Doo-mih-lay" if that makes any sense. But yeah, the mask came first I think. It was part of his persona. The super villain coming for revenge on the industry that dropped him when his brother got killed. He's coming with bars to murder these weak emcees too. He's just a villain with a metal mask. So it made sense to add Metal Face to DOOM. Then shorten it to MF DOOM for the play on words.
  • @sideshw1940
I love hearing your pops take on DOOMS music because he sheds some light on context in the song I’ve missed in the past. Been a DOOM fan for over 7-8 years and I still learn and catch new stuff.
  • @tharshack
He became MFDOOM after his brother died. Just like Doom from the comics the mask came to be a much more ell known and "darker" version of the man that once was
  • @elijahproto
