One of the most important things to know about the fuseki stage is the order and value of opening moves. And before ranking the moves we need to understand what direction has to do with all that. Which direction is the most desirable one?

A book that really helped me understand the opening when I was around 15-10k was "In the Beginning" from the Elementary Go Series. I highly recommend it.

Thank you so much! I'm very new to Go but I've been practicing martial arts for a number of years and the "short and long" explanation just clicked for me! I feel like I get the into the same headspace playing chess or go as I do in a sword fight and being able to translate that to a board is amazing! It's like a cut or a thrust, a jab or a cross. It's making me appreciate how beautiful this game is!

I'm ~150 games in and so far i've felt lost in the opening. I didn't know why I was playing this stone or this stone, it was all too vague. Now with the priority list it makes perfect sense, your explanations are clear and easy to understand. Bravo, and thank you. I'm excited to play another game, and another after that...

I really like that you prioritized the moves into tiers instead of only introducing the concepts which one should consider.
  • Thank you very mutch, it’s exactly the knowledg I wanted to learn. I will practice this soon ❤

Thank you for these videos (and I watch and do the lessons on the website as well). I've just got into Go - going in a week from knowing nothing to playing (and even winning!) a few games on a 9x9 against others. This video has been particularly useful for understanding what my opponents are doing at the beginning and why they suddenly "invade" my territory (the more aggressive style).

Great editing, I can see a lot of time is put into it, made things very clear
  • The opening are quite difficult for me before, but Now I got a lot clear, thanks

I have never played go, but I just love this channel! :-)
  • Thanks for the great explanation! One question regarding the Tier 5 example: wouldn't it be much more important for white to play somewhereon the left side (on rank 3 or 4) between its already established corners? Securing its area here seems to me of much more importance than the small extensions?
  • Excellent video! I've learned important opening pointers from it. A minor correction: fuseki (布石) refers to the whole-board patterns in the opening phase of the game, just like joseki (定石) refers to standard local development patterns that occur typically in the corner areas during the opening phase of the game. The phase of the opening is known in Japanese as joban (序盤).
  • That's the same as what I think when playing Go When fighting, you need some weight, but the basics are this
